No I am not using a cover or case of any type and no my fingers are not too long. Since my original post starting this thread and several redonkulous replies later I still love the phone but....

The proximity sensor on ip4 is either much different than the previous 3 or mine is somewhat overly sensitive or just a hair out of wack.

1 - The screen is slow to turn off as I bring it close to my face.
2 - The screen activates much to easily while still in use and pressed against my ear.
3- 20 hours later I continue to have the same issues

It may be a software bug with iOS4 and the way it is interacting with the proximity sensor on the new iPhone's, but it could also be a bad sensor on your phone.

So call Apple's customer service line and have them overnight you a new one, or make a Genius Bar appointment and have them replace your phone for a new one. That's one of the great things about owning an iPhone -- it's so damned easy to get it replaced for a new one.

The best iPhone ever.

Agreed, before this the iPhone 2G was my fave, I loved the battery life, the build quality, everything, the iPhone 4 has replaced the 2G as my favourite iPhone now though, I have NONE of the problems everyone else is having and I'm 100% happy with it, I'd suggest that the OP go and get a replacement as you clearly have a faulty unit

So are you going to return it or just keep coming on here to bitch about it?

So far my experience with the phone part of the phone is terrible. Usually when the phone is in use next to my ear nothing happens but a conversation. So far when the phone is next to my ear I have inadvertently activated the speaker phone 8 times and started several face chats that I did not want to start. I have also hung up on calls about 5 times.

This is a PROBLEM!! The sensor could be bad or the phone just hates me. Very frustrated day one with my new phone. I am keeping the 3Gs on standby and not selling it as I had first planned.

I love the iphone 4....but I have had that happen to me several times....activating the speaker phone...and starting face chats...the proximity sensor doesn't act like it did on the other iphones...or it may be because the phone is a little smaller? I don't know.

i think it's an iOS 4 issue. Had this problem come up on the 3GS when I updated to iOS 4 .

spent 4 hours driving and 13.5 hours camping and it was worth every second and dollar...that being said my sensor is TOTALLY out of whack, same problems everyone else is posting on this thread and the others. I cannot go back to anything else and I have no apple store in town (thus the four hours driving) so I'm gonna wait till the problem gets a little bit more reported and see if a small update won't fix it until I start trying to make moves on fixing it. hung up on 50% of the people I've called :/

I still love the phone but....

Wait, I thought you said it was the "worst phone ever?"

If this is the case, don't you think you maybe went a little overboard with your thread title? As a result, it's hard to take anything you say seriously due to exaggeration. :p

I know a few people have had issues with the sensor -- I haven't -- but I expect it'll be one of the many things addressed in the fine-tuning stage of the software. I'm sure there will be other bugs and minor annoyances that need to be worked out as well, but I'm not sure that your sensor grief constitutes "worst phone ever" as I can think of several phones worse than the new iPhone.

Maybe tame down the drama for future posts? :)

There is a thread I read on another forum where quite a few people are having the very same issues you are, it seems some of the sensors are not working properly.

I do think the sensor is bad and plan to make a swap.

Love the phone and think the iphone is the hottest device on the market. Poorly chosen title for a thread I agree. In terms of using this device as a phone currently I am having a terrible experience and the title conveyed that.

Sorry if it offended some.

I don't have a iPhone, but I'm pretty sure the iPhone 4 doesn't suck! :D

You have to remember 95% of the people are happy and using their phones... living their lives..working... playing... not reading MacRumors. It's only the unhappy people who are reading and posting the negative stuff you're reading here....
