So I decided to do a quick extreme low light test to see how much grain/noise we get, I've wanted to compare the iPhone 4's 720p with the Flip Mino's 720p for a while because I basically want to replace it with my phone's cam.

For those who are interested follow these links to download the raw files:

iphone4 22mb @ 720p for 17 seconds: www.willchristiansen.com/iphone4_video/IMG_0258.MOV

Flip Mino HD 21.3mb @ 720p for 17 seconds: www.willchristiansen.com/iphone4_video/VID00002.MP4

Interesting to note that the iPhone 4 seems to record at around 23.97 fps in the same light situation whereas the Flip records at 30fps almost the entire time. They both have almost the exact same bit rate which is most likely why the file sizes are so close. I imagine apple decided they want to drop the shutter speed in favor of a lower ISO. Seems like they are doing it pretty intelligently here.

NOTE: make sure you right-click and click "save link as" the .mp4 file might get caught by chrome's .mp4 html 5 junk and screw everything up when trying to play in browser.

If anyone finds this useful I can do some other tests.

Can you compare the video quality of both. In your opinion which takes better looking video under normal light conditions, and if it's the Flip HD, how large is the difference in quality?

From the videos you posted, it seems like the iPhone 4 takes much better video in low light situations.

I'm actually interested in normal light comparisons of the picture quality of the iPhone 4 vs. Flip HD.

Thank you in advance.

These videos were shot side by side in each hand, the LED was turned OFF on the iPhone 4.

I understand but one advantage of having iphone 4 is the light. Good comparison. I really can't tell the difference.:)
