I just found out that my iPhone 4 w/black bumper won't fit into my universal dock with iPhone 4 Universal Dock Connector. The connector they sell in a 3 pack doesn't fit with the iPhone + universal dock.

You MUST have the iPhone 4 dock to use the iPhone w/bumper. Universal dock isn't so universal after all!!!!!
Additionally, I tested other inserts, none of them work.

Another thing. Take a look at the slightly larger iPhone 3G USB to Phone Connector, it doesn't work with the bumper on either.

Great....

I was told the iPhone 4 dock wouldn't work with a bumper.

Was I misinformed?

Well at the iPhone 4 event (WWDC) there was a bunch of iPhone 4’s with bumpers in an iPhone dock.

I have the iPhone 4 dock and I noticed that you can wiggle it around, so it sounds like it was designed so you could use a bumper with it.

Can't you use a different (larger) insert for the universal dock?

The iPhone 4 dock won't work even with the bumper. The WWDC photos were for display purposes only.

Nope! I tested all the inserts. First thing I did.

I tested #9, #15, #16, #17, #18, #19 (iPhone 4)

I ordered the $30 iphone 4 dock to use with my iPhone. Turns out it doesn't go on it with the bumper. Waste of $30. I just can't help but believe the bumpers were a late minute solution to a problem (I wonder what that is). I can't see Apple doing stuff like this.

I can't even get the USB cable to plug into my iPhone 4 when I have the black bumper on the phone. The plastic part won't fit through the hole so that the connector makes contact with the phone's connector. It just won't connect! So I am using it without the cable now. Maybe it's because I am not using the cable from the iPhone 4 box, I am using an older iPod cable.

Yes, it will stand with no insert, but a bit wobbly. I really don't know if I feel comfortable with it lasting long, eventually I bet the connector on the dock will break off with repeated use.

Yes, correct! Only the newer cable works, what a drag huh?

Yes, but the whole point of having the insert is to protect the connector from wear.

Well, I think if you take some care in aligning it, it's not going to randomly snap off, but regardless, what good is the connector if it's intact but you refuse to use it? Take it out of the bumper and charge it then.

call me stupid but when has apple ever made any of their docks work with an iPhone with ANY case on?..... why it the iPhone 4 any different?

i've been using the universal dock with no insert for all my iphones, ipods (with cases). never had a problem with the connector breaking. have had the same dock for almost 2 years
