seriously why so many smart ass comments? i created the thread so that people interested in a dock who had seen the pics of the iPhone 4 with BUMPER in the dock would know that the UNIVERSAL dock doesn't work.

I have not personally tested the iPhone 4 dock, but I assume it works. Of course, the iPhone 4 dock doesn't work with ANY other devices which is why the universal dock is a BETTER option.

The phone of course does fit in the universal dock without an adapter... However, I personally don't like the idea of my iPhone being supported by only the dock connector or the way it looks without an adapter. My solution? I modified dock adapter #10 (the one for 5th/6th gen iPods). I lopped off the bottom of the adapter as it is already wide enough for an iPhone 4 with a bumper but it can't seat down into it far enough to make a connection with the bottom plastic intact. It offers a bit more support, looks more 'complete' and when the phone is in it you can't tell at all that it's modified.

The only reason I use my docks without an adapter is I use them both regularly for both my iphone and ipod. Find it pointless to have to buy and switch out adapters multiple times a day.

Let's try for a 5th time....

I was told the iPhone 4 dock wouldn't work with a bumper.

Was I misinformed?

Can't you use a different (larger) insert for the universal dock?

The iPhone 4 dock won't work even with the bumper. The WWDC photos were for display purposes only.

Thi iPhone 4 with bumper does NOT work with the iPhone 4 dock.

I ordered the $30 iphone 4 dock to use with my iPhone. Turns out it doesn't go on it with the bumper. Waste of $30. I just can't help but believe the bumpers were a late minute solution to a problem (I wonder what that is). I can't see Apple doing stuff like this.

No, an iPhone 4 with a bumper WILL NOT fit into the iPhone 4 dock--I tried and it's not even close to fitting.

I've been using a Griffin Simplifi dock next to my computer for over a year with no insert and I've never had an issue.

I've never seen or touched an Apple universal dock but the Griffin dock connector piece is built very sturdy and I've never felt I was risking the phone or the dock's connection.

To each his own...
