We've had a lot of people ask about iPhone 4 support on our App: Yes, we're working on an update to support the higher resolution collection... but surprisingly all of our wallpapers look great on the iPhone 4, even though they're 320x480.

Okay, here's a little experiment... using a few icons in the background, behind the folder/app icons.
Looks pretty plain, until you tap one of the folders and the hidden icons show through.
I could see someone spending hours getting all of their folders organized, then picking an appropriate icon to put under it... like a musical note for the music folder.
(and there are plenty of great "free for personal use" icons on the web, like this Coquette series)

Here are 2 that I made for people to use from my artwork. Basically taking my logo/branding and turning it into a wallpaper. For this purpose they do have my website address at the very bottom, but I tried to make it as least invading as possible. If you do happen to go to my site or blog and there is a piece you think I should make into a wallpaper please let me know and I would be more than happy to try and make it available (given that it is easily formatted to the size)
