iPhone 4 will not stay with full battery unless plugged in

I replaced the screen on iPhone 4 and everything works great on it. When plugged in it shows that it is charging and works great. But once it is unplugged it shuts off after 5-10 minutes with full battery life😕. I did indeed lose the contact clip that goes on the battery. Could that be my problem? Someone please help, I do not want to have to buy a new phone😡
