I think the new one looks better in every way compared to the old one. I like nice, solid, institutional looking devices. :) I'm not being sarcastic either, I really do like the new look.

I definitely will not be buying the new phone. The design looks hideous to me. This is not Apple.

3GS the new one reminds me of this:

I wonder if you gave both iPhones to a person that has never seen one before which one would they pick?

Yes, I agree. Finally something different. It's more Apple-like, in my opinion. I already didn't understand it why people hated it when people thought it was a fake Chinese one. I like the design, it's thin and it's something totally different: I really love it.

The same people who hated it when they thought it was a chinese knock-off, are the ones who now love it and find it amazing after realizing it was made by Apple.

Design looks more Sony than Apple to me. That being said, I think the new design it more reeled in looking, stronger and less gimmicky. It definitely has serious gadget appeal, though it does seem to lose it's Apple flavour somewhat. One of the best descriptions above for me was that it was institutional looking. I can get down with that, I also love serious looking hardware.

I wouldn't be worried about the awkward non-ergonomic edge - majority of users throw on a case so you wouldn't notice that. I'm really most interested in it's speed, weight and video capability. I'd love to see a zoom on the lens too. Apple wifi for me is quite poor, I have seen it fail on a range of their products, and it's become luck of the draw for me on whether I'll get a decent wifi on my device or not. I hope Apple really improve whatever issue causes this.

As with any new product, seeing them in person can affect one's perception.

I can see where the 4G looks nice -- and fit in one's pocket better.

It may be skinnier when laid down next to the 3g/3gs on a table...but this picture makes it look taller...
Could it just be the angle?...because if the actual touch screen isn't any bigger...I see a LOT of people griping about this.

no disrespect to anyone but how can you think 3GS is better looking then the new iphone????? To begin with the new iphone isnt better then some of the other phones out but its wayy better then the cheap plastic we have that is known as 3GS

Most people who buy an iPhone will be sticking it in a case. If I get the new phone I'm putting it in a incase slider the day I buy it. So what's the big deal with the looks? What I'm interested in is what's inside the phone and I could care less about a front facing camera.

I like the screws gone, and the metal ring around the camera.

I still don't like the seems, but that won't keep me from getting it.

I will say I was more discusted with the 3g when I first saw it than I was with the 4g.

Nothing comes close to the orginal iPhone in terms of looks.

well everyone has different tastes... the world would be pretty boring if everyone like the same things for the same reason. What you might consider cheap plastic some people may consider sturdy and elegant. Some people may not like layered look of the new iphone, or the seams or the cheap looking seperate buttons.... the list goes on and one. The point is just because you like something does not mean everybody else has to like it too.

4.0 on 3gs

what's the bottom line on os 4.0 on the 3gs. aside from hardware differences, software wise, will the 3gs do everything the 4g will?

What I've noticed so far on these forums and in general public, is that if you like the 3G/3GS design, you probably don't like the new design, and if you never really cared for the 3G/3GS design, then the new design looks awesome.

I'm with the latter, I was never a huge fan of the 3G/3GS design, plastic back and curviness, but I absolutely love the new square design. Already have a buyer lined up for when the "4G" comes out next month. :D

I know what you mean and I agree. Although, I would not use the word "institutional." Maybe "more purpose-built" and less 'cartoony'-bubbly.

FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN THE IPHONE 3G CAME OUT, and I saw the rounded corners, I was like "wtf, processors and computer chips aren't shaped like that! Why isn't it square???? There's gotta be air inside there; just dead space." Maybe that's why the new iPhone isn't rounded; they needed all the space they could get.

I think staying in your hand has part to do with it also. The iPhone 3G is notorious for flying out of people's hands. The round shape is conducive to it popping out of your hand. The new, squared-off iPhone is much less likely to fly out of your hand.

I'll likely be getting the new model for two reasons. My 3G contract is up this summer and the battery life of my 3G has dropped off tremendously over the last couple of months. I'm sure its because of how I used it....I'd let the battery get down to 40% and then charge it rather than running it out.

As for the new design...I like it fine. It should make texting on a flat surface a lot easier.

You're not supposed to let the batteries fully discharge.

I'm suprised no one ever mentions how much skinnier the new phone is. It's like from the bottom of the 3GS bezel down. Awesome!! It majes the 3GS look like a block!

I did notice, I just didn't think it was that big of a deal, the iPhone is already nearing the perfect thickness as it is.

Nope. Jobs said at the 4.0 intro event that "The 3GS will do most of what 4.0 has to offer." The video chat is obviously absent from the older models because it uses the front-facing camera, which you mentioned with 'aside from hardware differences.' It'll be interesting to see what else is missing.

And before someone starts arguing that that is not what Jobs said, and that he said that about the 3G (cus you know someone will, and be adamant about it too, without going back and checking it out), let me preemptively say, no, you're wrong. He said something along the lines of, "The 3GS will do most of what 4.0 has to offer, and the 3G will do many things...."
