It happens on my BMW too

Aux cable has a horrible hiss

If volume is max there is a terrible static distortion too in some parts of some songs. E.g. Higher pitched louder parts. The tracks are fine on the hifi.

I bought a line out cable, the hiss is gone but the distortion and crackle at louder higher pitched parts of some songs still exists.

It really sucks because you can't control the line out volume...

People say the line out cable cures it but perhaps they didn't notice the distortion. Only thing I can think of is my cable has a USB charger split too so I can USB charge and plug into the aux at the same time. Perhaps this causes the distortion but I highly doubt it. Dont want to waste more money on cables. Quite disappointed really.

Sounds like you guys should try a ground loop isolator. Available at Radio Shack for a minimal price.

I'm using the monster cable aux cord with my 4S, I get the hissing as well but if I set the volume at 90% on the phone-the hissing stops and does not sound distorted at all.

Issue fixed

Guys,

It was as simple as one of the previous poster mentioned.

Buy a ground loop isolator and connect it to the 3.5mm jack and it is fixed.

Worked for me.

I had exactly the same problem in my car.

You need a Line Out dock cable. This will fix the problem immediately and it's cheap as chips.

I know exactly what you are talking about it's the most irritating thing ever. Kensington make a cable for that specific purpose. I've had it for a while now and it works perfectly.

The OP already has a traditional aux cable and it produces the audio interference. Like I said Kensington makes a cable for the specific purpose I eliminating audio interference.

Hissing iPhone 4S in BMW

I have a BMW 128i 2008 convertible. I played my iPhone 3GS through an aux cable with no problems. I also play my iPod through an aux cable with no problems. I just got an iPhone 4S and it hisses like crazy. I have tried numerous cords, it still hisses. None of my other devices hiss and my dad's iPhone 4 does not hiss. So, it appears that it's my iPhone 4S that's the problem. I am also on the 4G network. Apple needs to fix. This is unacceptable.

I know this is old but I am still having an issue with my iphone 4s playing music through the aux input. It creates a hissing noise, but not other device has the issue. I just ordered this to see if it helps...

Anyone else getting a sort of high pitched hissing when playing music on the iPhone 4S through a car stereo's aux in socket and 3.5mm jack ?

It's quite annoying, and I didn't have the issue with the iPhone 4 or previous other iPhones.

Mine works fine. 2007 Honda Civic.

If you're experiencing this problem, the first thing to do is set your iPhone volume to max, and adjust the car stereo volume to your desired listening volume. Since the noise that your cable is picking up is at a relatively constant level, the increased output from the iPhone will now be more dominant.

People that are reporting no problem are probably already operating in this mode. But you can prove the effect to yourself by dialing in the opposite setting: low output from iPhone, increased volume on the car stereo to get back to the desired listening volume.

This may not fix your problem -- your noise source may be too great. But, as I said, it's the FIRST thing to try (i.e. cheapest/easiest solution).

Note: this is only true for audio cords that connect to the headphone jack; dock connectors have a constant line out volume.

Regards,
Tom

Yup. Quite true. Minimizing the amplification of the noise helps a LOT.

Same

I'm getting a very annoying high-pitched and pulsing hiss regardless if iphone 4 is charging or not. Never had the problem with earlier generation ipods which makes me think one reviewer may be onto something in thinking it may have some to do with the iphone's antenna or possibly interference from other charging devices perhaps also because of the antenna. Anyway, can't believe Apple doesn't have a fix for this or hasn't communicated some kind of workaround; this is poor service because they kind of market having the iphone as not needing to have an ipod; where's the best place to listen to your ipod, THE CAR! I have several friends that have the bluetooth connection from iphone to car stereo and it is phenomenal, but Apple doesn't seem to care about supporting those of us using the old-school 3.5 auxillary jack.

I'm getting the hissing without the phone being charged.
