I've just noticed that the lens on the back of my new iPhone 4S is in at a slight angle, if you look at the back of the phone, part of it is level with the back and the rest is about a millimetre or 2 above level. I noticed this today after i was trying to take some photos with the flash on and they white'd out a bit.

am i right in thinking that the lens partially sticking out (and it's the flash side that it is doing so) is the problem with whiting out when taking photos with the flash on?

I'm not able to get to an apple store for a coupla weeks, but wanted to check before i did.

Likely not the actual lens but a filter to protect it. I'm not sure. Mine is flush with my phone.

That might be a slight manufacturing mistake but its most likely the filter and if it isn't affecting your photo-taking ability, then it is a non-issue.

Well since its what I think is whiting out my pictures when using a flash, then yea then it is affecting my photo-taking ability, otherwise I would never have noticed...

Many cases screw up pics taken with a flash. You have a case on it?

take it the sticker is off, i left the translucent protector on at first, the one that comes with it and though i had a fault :D

take or contact apple they will sort it out!

Thanks for your unhelpful contribution...

Like I said in my OP, I can't get to the apple store for 2 weeks, but wanted to check that I'm right in thinking that, with it not being flush and the non-flush edge being out near the flash, that this is what is causing my photos to white out when using the flash.

Can you take a picture?

Of where it's not flush? Not really, only cameras I have access to are iPad and iPhone and iPad one is not good wnough

You should get it checked out. They shouldn't replace your phone (unless you want them too)

I'm sure it could be fixed replacing the back? Not 100% sure.

Well I managed to get to the apple store yesterday. They tried to replace the back, but apparently due to some pins being under pressure from the displacement of the lens, they couldn't, so they switched it out for a new one, I restored from iCloud in the store and all good!

That's great to hear. I've always been happy with Apples fine customer service.
