Has anybody else noticed this? Or have I missed a trick?

    Old headphones:

    Then with a microphone:

But now, on either side of the input we have 2 extra additions of coating? Does anybody know why this is?

    iPhone 4S:

OP is referring to the rubber pieces on both ends of the remote/mic. It was probably added for support.

The Apple headphones are notorious for breaking at that stress point, so they added those rubber pieces to help it to not stretch/break.

Just an updated design. Sound and function are the same.

You know, I looked at my headphones just last night and said to myself, "was this always there?"

Must be fairly new. My 3 month old headphones don't have this.

My 4 month old 4S came with the ones shown in the last pictures.

Did you buy your earbuds separate?

The headphones are still terrible. I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about this. :p

Actually just realized I'm still using my headphones from my iPhone 4 and my 4S ones are probably still in the box so they may have the different design afterall:cool:
