Oh cool! I upgraded to the 4 to the 4s when my mother bought herself a Nexus 5 in January! It's really fast; much faster than the 4. I'm participating in the OnePlus One summer contest; I just need a better phone, and bigger for that matter, too! I use my fifth gen touch more than my phone sadly;(

The iPhone 4s is still a very capable phone. Even when updated to the most recent version of iOS.

Those are hardware features. Not software.

I just upgraded from a 4S to a 5. It's quite an upgrade. Apart from what appears to be really poor battery life.

Yes the one main gripes I have of the "5" series of iPhones ... Poor battery life. It's truly very bad. A lot of people will say it's not and you need to do this and that. Basically "cripple"
Your phone, but why would they put the features there if you have to turn them off to make sure your phone stays charged all day?

Exactly. I only turn off background app refresh and spotlight. But I've always done that.

The 4s has always been a huge upgrade. The 4 is one version of an ideal phone. It was just really slow. The 4s gave it the one thing it needed with more speed.

And a lot of people don't do any of that and have a fine battery life with iPhone 5.

Think about it this way. Is AirDrop a feature of iOS 7 (software that released with iPhone 5s) or a feature of iPhone 5 (the oldest compatible hardware)?

Both iPhones can run AirDrop, but only on iOS 7. So, which is it? Hardware or software?

The answer is both.

But Tthomas612 was asking the difference between iOS 7 on a 5 and a 5s, and while there are very few differences, Touch ID and SloMo are two. Presumably, like AirDrop, upcoming iPhone models will also support Touch ID and SloMo, so you will start to see them less as 5s features and more as iOS 7/8 features.

No. He was asking what features of iOS 7 were missing on the iPhone 5/5C. The answer is none.

Touch ID (hardware) and SlowMo (hardware) are features of the 5S, not iOS 7.

The iPhone 5 didn't miss out on any of the features of iOS 7.

Just curious... What did the iphone 5 not get with iOS 7? I don't remember it or the 5c to be missing anything.

Which means I don't see what the 5s will be missing anything, but I could be forgetting

I'm extremely surprised people are still buying new iPhone 4S units.

The $100 price difference from the 5c is so tiny when you consider the total cost of the phone in cellular service over the time you will own it, and you're basically buying into three year old tech that will likely be de-supported by Apple soon.

(Not to mention, 8GB of storage? That's gotta be annoying!)

I'm glad you're enjoying the phone, but consider all this; if you're still in the return window it's definitely a good idea to swap it up for an iPhone 5c at least. You will be VERY happy you made this decision in two years, I promise you.

Where I live the 4s has cheaper plans around $40 per month while the 5c is around $80 per month.

I definitely am not in the return window. My mom got this phone after the 5 came out. Now, two years later, I am getting it. I'm just excited to get all the features and upgrades I mentioned, I dont have handoff or airdrop, but I'll be fine cause I have so many other awesome features. And when iOS 9 comes out I'll get the 6S:cool::)

Touch ID (hardware) and SlowMo (hardware) are features of the 5S, not iOS 7.

The iPhone 5 didn't miss out on any of the features of iOS 7.

Again I ask, is AirDrop a feature of the 5 series phones, or of iOS 7?

Is the camera software or hardware? How about the physical lens? How about the shutter sound effect? It's both, people. I rest my case.

Yes this is the truth. My fiancée has the 5c and has every single software feature I have on the 5s. Therefore that means the iphone 5 is not messing anything the iPhone 5s has besides slo mo and touchID.

Which means the 5s will get every iOS 8 feature the 6 will get....

This is also true. You make a point. However I was wondering if the 5 was actually missing stuff like the 4s and the 4. I realize it's missing touchID and SloMO. Now with iOS 8 I would assume the 5 will be missing some stuff

4S got Siri and a few other things that 4 didn't get, right?

That doesn't inherently mean that, but no one will know until the 6 is revealed.

Well that's true that we don't know that, but on looking at previous iOS releases ... The iPhone 4 had pretty much every feature on iOS 5 then got a little bogged down on iOS 6 then iOS 7 almost made it a snail. Then with the 4s it started with iOS 5, did wonderfully well with 6 and 7... I can assume iOS 8 might do a little damage to it. The iPhone 5 started with iOS 6 and did great with iOS 7. I'll probably assume that iOS 8 could dampen it a little bit. Then on iOS 9 it may be very slow.

Which brings us to the 5s. It started with iOS 7. Which means it's first update will be iOS 8. I can't remember a time when Apple has made the phone slow with it's first update of iOS. So I'd have to assume that the 5s can and will handle every feature of iOS 8.

4 might not be he best comparison to use for any phones that came after it as it was the last one to use a single core processor and was quite a bit less powerful than even just the 4S just simply based on the CPU and GPU power (which are responsible for a huge part of the overall performance).

It makes my point even better. The 4 handled iOS 5 fine. It had no problems. Besides Siri what was the 4 missing from iOS 5?

My point being I can't see any feature of iOS 8 being missing on the iPhone 5s.

Some are software, most are hardware-based. AirDrop is a feature of iOS 7 on the iPhone 5 and above.

I think Apple will support the iPhone 5 (maybe not the 4S due to its RAM) and above for a long time yet due to the dual-core chip. I can't see iOS 9 slowing down the 5, for example.

Most of your comments I can definitely agree with.

So do you believe I am right to say that the 5s will have every feature of iOS 8 just as the iPhone 5 had every feature of iOS 7? I don't understand how people says Apple strips the iOS down on the devices first iOS update when in my eyes that's never been the case.

If anything Apple supports the devices they put out much longer than anyone else. The iPhone 4 is 4 years old and has iOS 7 on it.

So, let's see with
iOS 7, 512MB ram required
iOS 8, dual core CPU required

Perhaps
iOS 9, 1GB ram required, coincidentally, all lightning, all retina display, all iSight cameras, all Siri
iOS 10, 64bit required
iOS 11, Touch ID required

And on and on...

It will no doubt get every feature of iOS 8. The iPhone 6 will undoubtably have some exclusive features that will not be available on older models, but that's always the case.

iOS 7 was not stripped down on the iPhone 5, it just didn't get some of the hardware-exclusive features that the 5S got, like Touch ID and SlowMo camera.

I believe the iPhone 4 should of been cut off at iOS 6. The phone is not powerful enough to run iOS 7.

All dual-core devices with 1GB of RAM should be supported for a long time yet In my opinion. These are very capable devices.

Yeah the 4s upgrade was the biggest upgrade especially since the 4 is basically 3GS hardware with a slightly higher CPU and more RAM. Plus its GPU is phenomenal over the 4
