You people need to quit b--ching. What did you expect buying/activating the phone the first day? There is a limit to how much traffic servers can handle. All the whining and righteous indignance paints a really ugly portrait. It's a phone. Not a lifestyle.

BTW... mine arrived at 1 PST. failed to activate over the air. Got home from work. Activitated the first time through iTunes. Restoring now.

You need to get your head checked if you think there's any significant difference between the three carriers. They're all poised to rape you one way or another. One is no better or worse than the other.

Got my new iPhone 4S and already activated (4:30pm)... try a little harder lazy people!

AT&T botched my order made at 7AM on the 7th and is telling me 28 days. I'm off contract and going to Verizon.

You will be very disappointed if you go to verizon. Data Speeds, No Voice and Data at the same time and the 160 character limit to text messages.

I just laugh at the double standard. Apple servers wilt (again) under the load of everyone trying to download iOS5 and they get a pass.

AT&T servers wilt on launch day and they are the worst company ever.

It's simple economics. It's not worth investing millions in infrastructure for a one day event if it's not going to significantly increase (or prevent the loss of) sales.

For all the crying and moaning on here, everybody will likely have their phone running in 24 hours and chalk it up to a standard launch day experience.

With record sales today, there is ZERO incentive for them to change their behavior....

I'm still mad about AT&T's tethering pricing. And I still have a grandfathered unlimited plan on my iPhone 4(not S).

Quoting myself here but this is my post before the iPhone 4S launched:

1. Apple releases iPhone 4S.

2. Some MR poster throw a hissy fit.

3. Claims of "Apple sucks" and "I'm buying a Galaxy SII" become more prominent.

4. Stories about how Apple is doomed are created by pissed off posters.

5. The average consumer does not care and buys the 4S anyways. Apple sells million of iPhone 4S every quarter and it becomes the #1 selling smartphone.

*Sequence if iPhone 5 is not launched.

Seems accurate.

I have the unlimited data plan for $30. When I upgraded today at Radio Shack the AT&T system said the price of the unlimited plan had been raised to $40. Anyone else see this?

Now siri servers are apparently toast because it can't understand a word I say. The one feature I wanted to play with...

Given that there are two other carriers to choose from, and given four solid years of complaints from iPhone user's about AT&T's service, why the hell are people still choosing AT&T?

I understand that there are a relatively small amount of people out there who only get AT&T service at their home and/or workplace, and I understand if those kind of people choose AT&T. But it seems that the majority of people buying the iPhone 4S with AT&T are not those kind of people. Could someone please explain why?

Because all the whining you hear around the Internet about AT&T's service being vastly inferior to that of Verizon is coming from a very vocal minority in large cities (SF and NY, to name a couple) where that happens to be the case. Nobody is going out to the countless smaller cities, like where I live about 80 miles north of Seattle, where AT&T's service is impeccable and blows the competition out of the water (in 3 years, I can count on one hand the number of dropped calls I've had with my iPhone3G... no joke.) I suspect that's the case in lots of other places too but reporting on reliable service in a city of 200K isn't an interesting story so the tech press skews in favor of all the bellyaching in more densely populated locations.

Best Buy Preordering sucks.

I would have loved to have my non activated Iphone 4s. a least I would have it. but Pre-ordering from best buy seemed to be the worst Idea. I was among the first 20 on the 7th at the opening of best buy that morning. I get an email today saying it will be here before the 31st.. Nice. So why did I pre order again? I call and try to get a better understanding of the word pre order but seems like best buy has a different understanding. I should have ordered it from apple. I thought it was going to be hell with the load but at least I would have had my phone today.. now im going to wait.. NICE. any one else have this today after pre ordering?

How exactly is calling technical support or Applecare going to get your Iphone's activated any faster or better? The servers are overloaded with activations.

Too bad they still can't handle a launch, been trying for hours to activate my dam phone! I really hate ATT!
If I could get an early upgrade on my Verizon acct I'd dump them in a minute!

Thought i would share my experience. Fedex delivered my phone around 2:30pm Pacific, been holding out on activating after reading the forum about AT&T activation hell. I couldn't resist any longer so thought I would give it a shot. I have an existing AT&T account, this is an upgrade, and I dialed 611 from my 3GS. The process was automated, and I went through the activation without a snag.

Maybe try 611 for those of you that haven't tried activating yet.

Damn, I remember last year when the 4 launched how crappy service was in my area for the first few weeks after. Looks like it may be even worse this time around.

Apple benefits from having a user base who will buy new products regardless of how much they actually have to offer among their predecessor.

Except not every iPhone owner is an iPhone 4 owner. For those with 3GS and below it's a significant upgrade. Furthermore, for "normal" users the two year contract based upgrades make sense and work quite well for their releases.

Having the same issue

I was going to come up with a witty reply to your worthless post but then I saw you were a Ravens fan and decided you weren't worth the effort.

I wonder why there has been no word about Verizon yet? Sprint and AT&T both set new records but there hasn't been any Verizon news. What's up with that?

I am still a little angry at AT&T. Last friday during the Pre-sale both Apple's and AT&T's site went letting me update my phone even though I have had the same phone 3GS since it came out. So I had to call AT&T customer service. After a long wait I finally spoke with a live person (after the automated jumping through hoops). The nice girl from AT&T said she ordered through their internal system. Well, after days nothing appeared on my account on the web. I called AT&T again and they sent me a email and said my order was backordered, even though I ordered on the first day (about 10AM EST). Then after seeing nothing in web account by Thursday I called AT&T and said if I don't get ANY word on shipment then I would cancel my account (since I had it since the Cingular days 2001).

Well, then Thursday evening I get an email from AT&T with a shipping number sending it over night. They sent out the overnight package at 1030 P.M. Well Fed EX doesn't do overnight after a certain time of day and they don't do overnight on weekends either. So by the tracking I am getting my iPhone 4S Monday.

The moral of the story is AT&T bad customer service if front and center and this if it wasn't for the Unlimited grandfathered data I would have dumped AT&T right on the spot!

might have something to do with the lack of iphone 4's for launch last year. remember the long lines of disappointed customers

Awesome day. iPhone delivered in afternoon. Went out to dinner. Activated iPhone via iTunes on AT&T and went thru in minutes. Siri is the bomb. Noticeable speed difference from iphone 4 Love it.

I bought my phone from the AT&T store and it had no trouble activating.

Did everyone here buy through Apple or something?
