iPhone 4s or 5 camera a step backwards?

If i remember correctly, i read in engadget that Apple made a deal with Sony(i think) for new camera sensors not long ago.

Not sure though.

Anybody else see the incongruity there?
;)

Apple has proven time and again that they are not above screwing up.
They just have the PR clout to sweep it under the rug a lot better than others.

iPad (and iPod touch) != iPhone. Apple may've made poor decisions in the past (like sticking the ****** cameras in the non iPhone devices), but as far as I'm aware, they've never actually taken a step *backwards* in terms of hardware/performance. They're not idiots - the backlash would be too large if the phone performed *worse* than its predecessor. The iPad and ipod got away with the crappy cameras because the previous models had no cameras period... and I guess in Steve's eyes, a ****** camera is better than no camera. He probably just wanted the better camera to be something he could stick in next-year's model (eventually they'll run out of stuff to add)

Until they increase the size of the CCD, increasing the number of MP is pretty worthless but like others have said, the average consumer will take a 8MP phone over a 5MP in a heartbeat without ever knowing why they should or shouldn't want it.
Right, but I bet you have a camera more than 2 megapixels...but why? That's more than enough to fill a screen and give crisp prints even at A4 size.

Newer sensors do have things like micro-lensing and backside illumination to actually increase the number of real photons hitting the diodes

So while apple clearly won't do anything dumb like drop in a 12mp sensor, its highly likely they'll drop in a modern 8mp and maintain image quality.

Even if they do, if they could increase the actually optical clarity and size of the lens it would help get more light in too...

Apple last year made a big deal of saying that MP's does not a good camera make ... they should maintain that stance. Especially coupled with the fact that the iPhone4 is the most popular camera on flickr ... The people have spoken ... people love taking pictures with their iPhones ... Travesty if Apple throw that away

Popular because of the quality of the camera, or popular because a lot of people who use flickr just happen to have an iPhone for a whole host of other reasons... I'm not dissing the claim, just saying that buying the most popular car does not necessarily mean it is the "best".

Not saying popular = best .... and yes the iPhone 4 as a unique model within flickr helps it vs the diversity of the other devices out there.... but still, there is a reason people take more and more pictures with their phones and thats certainly helped by the fact that they must like the quality and resulting images (helped by the dizzying array of apps to do post-processing for good or bad) which drives them to take more and more pics

I just hope and want Apple to maintain the quality

Since when does technology go backwards?

ofc the camera in iphone 5 will be better.

The ipod touch camera is horrendous, I have a 2008 phone that has a better camera than an ipod touch.

Oooooo, like 2008 is SO freakin' old... You can hardly compare a dedicated camera from 2008 to a small crappy camera in something like the iPod Touch, FFS.
