I don't know what Verizon's return window is, but if she just bought it she should be able to return it.
besides for the fact that everybody knew there was a new coming out today, nobody buys a phone over 1 month old for the listed price.

Ask Verizon or Apple because they will know the answer much better and with more accuracy than anyone here who doesn't work for them. In other words, the company will have a better answer for you than a random stranger on the internet. Get it now?
