Except they don't force anything. My ipad 2 is on iOS 6 and shall remain there as long as I have it. Just because there's an upgrade option doesn't mean you have to blindly click it.

Except they do when you have to restore it, like when you have some kind of a problem and a restore is the answer, or when you buy/sell one.

I am running IOS 8 on my iPad3. Some parts feel faster. Some parts are definitely worse than on the last version of IOS 7.

Worse is Safari that takes a long time and shows a lot of white when opening a new webpage.

Worse is switching between apps as its takes much longer for the iPad to react after the double click on the home button.

I have reduced motion on.

I've noticed that if I use SwiftKey, the keyboard some times takes a while to come up. But once it does, SwiftKey is very fast. I've experienced some lag in the app switcher a few times.

I was having issues with the Camera app freezing up for lengthy periods of time in iOS 7.1.2, and similar things are happening here.

So far, everything else feels about the same as iOS 7.1.

I would rather have the new features, and am willing to accept some slowdowns and screen space cramping to get more life out of this device. I don't mind the slowdowns as long as once things finish loading it is fast. It's not annoying like keyboard lag in early versions of iOS 2.0, or iOS 4.0 on a 3G which completely destroyed it's usability. I've never used an iPhone 4 w/ iOS 7.x, so I don't know how that compares, but the way people complain about it, I imagine it's not as bad as that.

No Problems with iOS8 on iPhone 4S

My wife and I have a couple of iPhone 6's on the way, but thought we'd try out iOS8 on the two 4S iPhones we currently have for a couple days while waiting.

I don't play games on the phone so the choppy graphics problem reported isn't an issue for me.

My phone seems to be working much better since upgrading. Much more stable, way better response from vocal text input, less issues with screen touches not getting picked up. I am really enjoying some of the new features such as the recent and favorite contacts available on the double tap of the home button, the text generating as you speak word by word, option keyboard availability, etc

I was also having lots of issues with voicemails showing up but not being able to be listened to, and downloads from the app store having to be retried a dozen times. Both of these issues have gone away, at least for now.

In my experience, upgrading has only been a positive experience.

I'm very pleased with iOS8 on my 4S. No complaints at all and the notification improvements alone make it worth having. I am ordering a 6 tomorrow so I'll have my trusty 4S for a few more weeks as my daily driver.

Regards......Ed

I don't blame them for not bringing new features to a 2011 phone, but what's the point of releasing iOS 8 at all for the 4s, other than to have bragging rights that they support their phones for longer than Google.

a 2011 phone that was being sold not so long ago.

for me apples whole lineup of phones is a mess everything from the naming scheme to whats on offer. i mean the 5c at 8 gig you can hardly update it to ios8 over the air

I installed iOS 8 on all 4 of my iPhone 4S models and on my iPad3/4 models. All devices perform very well and I'm not experienceing any reduced performance as a result of the iOS upgrade. My initial impressions are that iOS8 is faster on my devices than the 1st offering of iOS7 was. I was worried about this update due to some negative reports on iOS8's performance on older devices, but I'm glad I pushed ahead and tried it out for myself.

Nonsense, I updated both my parents iPhone 4S's and they work just the same, and Airdrop wasn't in iOS 7 for 4S's either if I remember right, I'm sure that was a iPhone 5 and up feature.

ios 8 on 4s
seems fine. there was animation lag, but its gone now after like 3-4 minutes. and its feels snappier? *reduce motion is off, i like the animation.

but there's not much differences visually.

quick 5 minutes check, (i have not read any new features on ios8, i like to surprise myself :D)

- fonts seems slightly different.
- icons slightly larger
- new official wallpaper, *not important at all
- reminder and notes still sucks
- timelapse and timer for camera
- health app
- widget in notifications
- different look for Control Centre
- recent and fav in Multitasking
- medical ID in emergency call.

Well nothing new, it just 1-2% better. and i dont know what it is

For those experiencing lag, just reset your phone settings before update. It should work fine.

*after 10 minutes, there's no animation lag at all

I've barely noticed any difference from IOS7, though I've always had 'reduce motion' switched on.

Workmate's wife said its terrible. Asked on my local geek forum, reply just on, seems similar to iOS7. I am picking that the difference is little, but if RAM gets used up by apps, etc, and the larger OS, then it may crawl. There may be the odd setting that hurts the 4S, but I think it will be ok

Hmmm...

Imagine if Apple introduced the iPhone 4S like Macrumors done above:

But that does not apply to the iPhone 4s ... until a newer phone came to be.

This post would have surely disheartened me, had I not been already keen on upgrading to the 6 or 6 Plus! :D

Not everyone with an iPhone can afford to buy a new iPhone 6.

What about iPad 2? Is it still pretty usable or visibly laggy?

What about my NEW iPad with 16 GB built-in storage and no option to add more storage? When I access mine, it tells me This update cannot be installed because it requires at least 5.7 GB of storage.

If I removed all my photos and music, I still could not install it.

And the iOS 8.0 clearly states its size is 1.1 GB.

Something smells rotten in the state of Apple.

Those who are saying they updated to iOS 8 on their iPhone 4 and iPad 3/4 with no problems MUST NOT have photos, music and other apps on it.

I think Apple should offer the choice--and they do:

- You want features and improvements (including future app updates) over speed: upgrade!

- You want to stick with what you have: don't.

...

Well, sort of. I had to restore my iPhone 4S yesterday. I would have been quite content to keep it on iOS 7, but going through a restore process, the only option was to update it. So, while there is a choice when everything is working fine, the choice disappears if you have to fix things...

Memory capacity after upgrade to iOS8

How much memory is available when iOS8 is installed on iPhone 4S 16GB? Currently with iOS 7 it is 13,3 GB. On iOS5 it was 13,6 GB. Thanks :)

My wife has a iPhone 4s and she thinks it is fater with the IOS 8 upgrade

After the upgrade to IOS 8, she thinks it is faster, some other aspects are some of the apps like Facebook's connection to games, synching between Facebook, iPAD and the iMAC, now all the games are in synch. Under IOS 7 she always had problems in synching between the different devices, I tested Netflix on the 4s under IOS 8 to see if it's slow or there are issues with performance, and it seems to be fine, good performance. I am the IT support desk...so far no complains from the users...I asked her if she wants to upgrade to the new iPhone and she said that she is OK with her iPhone 4s for now.

The download is 1.1GB, but the install is much bigger. They want enough space to try to alleviate possible issues with the install process.

I would say it seems like apps are more often being swapped out of RAM than with iOS 7, but I can live with that. One exception is the Facebook app which really takes ages to start up. But I mostly use Flipboard to access Facebook anyway.

The Facebook app has to be one of the worst iOS apps. Even prior to iOS 8 it was painfully slow and clunky. Thanks for reminding me about Flipboard ;)

iPhone 4S is not compatible to iOS8. After updating my iPhone 4S's iOS, my phone has started hanging and it has disabled my WiFi. No matter how many times I restart my phone, its WiFi touch button does not respond and has greyed out. Also whenever my WiFi chip is disabled, my phone's battery drains faster. Even if I'm not using my phone, battery percentage just decreases even though there is no open apps. my I want to degrade my phone to lower iOS6 or iOS7 but, reset restores it back to iOS8. There is also a noticeable delay in touching an app or phone functions and its response. Does Apple allow degrading phone to lower iOS where its compatible and phone functions normally and there is no load on WiFi chip?
