Hey everyone, total newbie, been reading/searching the forums and google but can't seem to find the right answer, likely because I'm not asking the right question or asking it correctly, hence this thread. I'm sure I'll get some snappy answers but if one of you could even just point me to the right place I'd be very appreciative!

I have a 4s, unlocked, iOS 5.1.1. It's originally a fido phone (from Canada, eh) and I'm currently in Rome, Italy for the foreseeable future. I'm using a Wind SIM card (Vodafone was a disaster) which is fine for the phone/txt features and wifi isn't an issue but when I'm out and about, lost in this labyrinth of a city I can't connect to the net at all. My wife's unlocked/JB 3GS has no issues whatsoever but my 4s is, well, just a phone. I had the same issue on Vodafone (as well as it kept prompting me to reactivate the dang thing) and had taken it into the shop where the (non English speaking) salesperson showed me his network settings (in Italian). There were WAY more options on his phones settings than mine. He seemed to indicate that I needed to choose a specific something which I didn't have an option to choose. Yay.

At any rate I want my phone to be more than just a phone. Does anyone out there have any insight/experience or witty darts to throw my way?

    Thanks!

Wow, 415 views and not even a snarky response? Lol.

In my continuing research I found that many users of unlocked iPhone 4s' had similar trouble with connecting to the providers network using 5.1and the work around seems to be to downgrade to 5.0 or earlier. My particular 4s shipped with 5.1 and therefore it is my understanding that that is the earliest version of iOS I'd be able to downgrade to. So essentially I'm fizznucked. Yay.

I wonder if I were to upgrade to iOS 6 if that would fix the issue. Problem is my google maps still works great and if there were ever a city on earth where you actually really need gMaps it's here in Rome. I'm hesitant to upgrade to apples bastard version of gMaps.

    Rock, meet Hard Place.

You are correct, it is an issue for some when relying on Gevey unlock

If you can get an IMEI unlock (grey market vendor) it will solve the issue.
