Another Example

Bought my iPhone 4 (Verizon) Dec 21. Today, Jan 7, it wouldn't turn on and I fixed it by pressing home/start buttons for 10 sec.

The phone was at 50% charge and had been sitting on my desk all night. I had not loaded any odd programs on the phone--just a couple of very common apps.

Hope Apple can troubleshoot this--to me, it sounds like an OS updating problem.

"Troubleshoot" it? I doubt that Apple will even admit there IS a problem. There history with admitting problems with the iPhone has not been good.

The power button would be great, if the phone actually had a physical power button that disconnects the power right away. If the thing happens to freeze up, then the soft power button doesn't do a thing - nor does the various combinations of press home and power button exactly 8 seconds, exactly 10 seconds, etc.

Mine got the shakes of death (iPhone 4 32gb). I heard this awful noise and realised it was the iPhone 4. Opened the phone and disconnected the battery rather than letting it keep warming up and making such an awful noise. That solved it.

All these sorts of issues seem to be related to app / OS glitches.

Me too - 4s iphone 1 day old

Thanks you all for the suggestion of holding down the home and power button down at the same time for at least 10 seconds! It worked. This sounds like a universal problem with iphone. Does anybody have info on what Apple's response is. Should I return my iphone for a Droid Max???

my iphone 4s turned off can't turn back on

I am so glad I found this Page. I found it by putting, "my iphone 4s turned off can't turn back on" in Google.

My phone was fully charged this morning, this afternoon, I pull out my phone, and it's completely off. Sunken-heart I googled this thread.

After reading above I held down the Off button and Home Key for about 10 seconds. Let go, at first nothing happened, then about 20 seconds later the phone turned on. It has 71% power. I have owned the phone for 1 month 7 days.

Glad i found this post!

It's not even close to being a "universal" problem. I have three iPhones in my immediate family and there are several others in my extended family. Mine got hot once and drained the battery quickly. I tracked it down to a faulty app. The app would not shut down correctly and kept running the processor. It wasn't an Apple issue at all. Once i deleted that app, it has never happened again.

Yeah, it kinda is an Apple issue, they allow that app to be installed. So, yeah.

Apparent bricked 4s, need help plz!

I have a pretty BIG problem. I recently got a iPhone 4s iOS 5.0.1. I was really excited and couldn't wait to jailbreak it so I did so within the next few days with Absinthe by the Dream Team. All went well and I was happy with it, then poof it all went wrong. Last night, (few days after the jailbreak) after I got done installing myassistant (siri addon) my phone was fine ( or at least it seemed fine), until this morning, the phone was off and would not turn on no matter what I did (power and sleep holding variations = none worked), no light on the screen would show at all. I know it wasn't dead cause cause it was on the charger this morning ( and I'm not blaming it on myassitant btw, I know things like this can happen, but I also know that in the jailbreak world, being "bricked" almost never truly happens). And the screen is defiantly not broken. Ok so now I hooked it up to the computer and amazingly iTunes recognized it, but only as an iPhone in recovery. I was about to re-restore, but I got greedy and wanted to see if I could use other tools (tinyumbrella, recboot, and redsnow) to try to kick out of recovery, but to no avail. Bbbuuuttt, when I got to redsnow 0.9.10b4 , I accidentally selected the boot tethered option with the iPhone 3gs 5.0.1 firmware ( ya! Big oops!) and it let me go through the process with my 4s! Once I realized what firmware I selected, I exited redsnow and unplugged my iPhone. I'm not sure if it permanently screwed it up, but it did something harmful. Each time after that when I plugged my iPhone in the computer (windows 7) could not recognize it. And I'm pissed off by now. So I try various techniques with the buttons and what not, and amazingly I got it to finally be recognized in iTunes as an iPhone that needs restored (but only every now and then it'll show up). So I finally said screw it a fresh restart is better than a bricked iPhone, but it was too late. I tried to restore with the stock Ipsw, and I got various errors each time: 1601, 1602, 1314, 2005. I am almost out of ideas and I don't want to be stuck with a bricked iPhone 4s. I have researched and researched, but I have not a clue what to do. Can someone lead me in the right direction? Thank you for your attention and advice.

SIRI in iphone 4s

I too had the same problem in my iphone 4s. The siri was hanging the device always, when ever i was trying to assist the SIRI then my iphone hanged and i had to reboot it, but unfortunately one day the phone did not turn on, i have deposited my device from the store i purchased it.
What is the problem in the iphone, why is it giving such untimely issues. i never expected any problem while purchasing it.

My iPhone 4S is less than a week old. Left it for about an hour, went to use it, it had turned itself off and it wouldn't turn back on. Battery was at 66%. Only found out how to get it going again by reading all the above. (thanks for that everyone).

Now a bit concerned that it turned off it the first place and so many others have had exactly the same problem :(

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Your battery may be dead I mean dead/ fried , this happend to my 3GS , the phone got really warm few hours later cold and it won't turn on even after hard reset , plug iTunes , try recovery mode , dfu , take it to the apple store they will replace it no questions ask.

Possible fried battery?

I think my battery may be fried. My iPhone 4S died mid phone call on Wednesday afternoon, seemingly for no reason. It wouldn't switch on but got really, really hot. I left it to cool down and when I got home from work I Googled and decided to put it on charge. The most common advice was to use the power and home buttons to get the phone to switch on but to no avail. Eventually it beeped at me to show my battery was completely dead when it had been fully charged and not being used that morning. I finally tried a restore on iTunes which wiped everything. Useful. I thought all was fine again as it charged up and was pretty much business as usual except the battery life was really poor compared to before. Then today I was playing a game on it and suddenly the screen pixelated and died. I didn't even get the usual warning of "You only have 20% battery remaining." It wouldn't turn on. Again I tried to charge it, nothing. Plugged it into my Mac and lo and behold iTunes said it was in recovery mode so I had to do another system restore. Managed to get it restored this time to before the original crash. Considering visiting the Apple store on Tuesday. Can I just walk in and get it replaced? Or would I have to make an appointment? Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Iphone 4S won't urn after update.

So i've had my iPhone since december, i'm a first time iPhone/apple user and have never had a problem with my phone. However today at work, my finally actually drained to the point when i want to turn my phone back on it showed the battery at in red, and a sign indicating me to plug it into the charger. Finally got home and did it, my phone was at 68% when i got a notification saying there is a new update to remove bugs....i believe it was this new iOS5.something. As naturally as i thought it to be i opted for the update. I saw my phone get about 3/4 of the way updated and came back to it about 40+mins later and i won't turn back on. Its not hot, i've tried hooking it up to iTunes and nothing...did the simultaneous home/power button and nothing. When i plug it into the computer i hear the sound it makes when a usb device is plugged in but doesnt let me access it or anything. I'm just looking for some help, i'm a total aple newb, and have exhausted all other ideas, or options. I will dread to take me phone back and be humilated by a fricking apple genious. Never dropped it or mistreated it.....anyone savvy enough to help me or help diagnose? 'd greatly appreciate your efforts and concerns.

Thank You

Oh god, me too!

Same thing with me! My iPhone 4 shut down its self yesterday, I remember dropping it 4 times, but that's it. It did the same last night, but it turned on after I pressed the power button, it happened again the time I was listening to music from it, I did the same to turn it on and it did. But when I left it to charge, it turned off again, not knowing what to do, I tried to turn it on, but nothing happened, I tired putting it into iTunes but nothing popped up, I tried to press both the Home and the Power button and nothing happened. I'm trying not to freak out because this used to be my father's and I wish not to get them to scold at me. I also remember it got a few water droplets on the screen because I left it in the Toilet, I hope it didn't go into the Charge because that's what killed my Uncle's iPhone. Please help! I have School tomorrow and I need to call my friends!!

Phone died and started burning up

I've only had my Iphone 4S a week and I noticed on the day that it just went off for no reason. I had to do a hard reset by rebooting, pressing the on/off switch at the top and the home button at the same time. I had problems at first restarting but after 20mins, I saw the apple logo. It happened quite a few times in the week but Yesterday (Monday 19th March) It did the same thing only this time, it started geting hot, and won't work after that.

I've never ever had no problem with any of my other phones like this so why Apple?

I am also having a problem with my 4s not booting up. But the problem with mine is it is stuck with the apple logo, so I know the battery isn't dead. I have tried holding the lock+home buttons several times and it does the same thing every time, it looks like it will work (phone turns off then apple logo comes up) but it still is just sitting there. I jailbroke it and has been running fine for 3 weeks and then this happened. Every few minuits the screen goes black then the apple comes back up. I tried to see if i could use Absinthe to fix it but it wont recognize it and neither will itunes on my mac.

My Iphone 3 has the same problem

Ever since I updated my Iphone 3 the battery life has gotten shorter and shorter. Now, even with a full charge it gets hot, goes white and then dead. Sometimes when I put in on the charger it comes back to life with a full charge. Sometimes it only come back to life when I sync it up with Itunes. But most of the time it does not turn back on until after hrs of being charged.
I did reset it back to factory settings, still the same problems occur.
I hold the reset button and power button down for 10 seconds-nothing happens. Just now, I had to do that twice with it on the power cord hooked up to the computer and on the second try it came back on.
I've updated my Itunes. but i have not re-updated my Iphone after restoring it to factory settings.
I don't know what else to do....Any suggestions???

Same Issue

I recommend for everyone having this issue take it to Apple. I had the same problem a couple days ago but my phone turned back on with the reset. The phone was very hot and had to be on the charger for 2 hours before turning back on.

Now my phone has once again shut itself off but this time will not turn back on. My phone is not hot, has been on the charger all night, and still nothing.

Mine either.....

I've had my phone for over a year and this happened for the first time ever. I have the 4 though. Thanks to the helpful tips on this page, I was able to reset it. But I don't know why it just shut down. And yes I did try the "on button" before I started to freak out. I can't live without my phone. Thanks for all the info.:D

Alcohol jump start

Two things were wrong with my iphone 3gs when it all the sudden wouldn't respond to anything.

Either the little negative connector from the motherboard to frame slipped off next to the battery connectors, not likely (a ground is not necessary to charge) because it was a loose frame and that fixed the charging issue or

Its the mysterious and legendary alcohol jump start.

Just take some alcohol and swab or spray it on the connection port and plug it it and it began to charge and finally turned on
