I've tried a different PC, downloaded the IPSW from Redmond Pie, through iTunes, verified Hosts file, DFU mode...nothing works and I keep getting the same error. I haven't tried an OTA update as of yet.

Are you sure you're using DFU mode and not recovery mode? DFU mode should have the screen of the phone being black/turned off when plugged in.

Only use the IPSW through iTunes to ensure it's valid as you are having updating issues.

    Is iTunes up to date?

You don't need to worry about anything but a good copy of the IPSW (recommend you use the one from iTunes or the iPhoneWiki) and that your host file points to Apple.

Put the IPSW on desktop, navigate to it using iTunes.

Thanks for your replies. How do I obtain the IPSW through itunes? I downloaded the ipsw linked through Redmond Pie here: http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS6.1/041-6485.20130128.mt0dy/iPhone5,1_6.1_10B143_Restore.ipsw

    iphone 5 GSM

    Is that the correct ipsw?

I have the latest version of itunes installed.

I am in dfu mode, yes. Hold both buttons down for 10 then release power hold Home until device drive install notification on taskbar appears.

    ----------

I've tried updating on 3 different Windows 7 64 Bit PC's all with same results.

Make a clean restore on your phone in settings.
Then back to iTunes and restore.

Thats how I solved my problem.. I guess for now. I'm gonna come back, brb.

EDIT: GETTING THE SAME F ING ERROR WITH ITUNES ! (3194) - Even tho I restored in the settings, wtf is this black magic?

It's definitely your IPSW. I would ensure you have the latest version of iTunes to be sure, first.

Plug phone into iTunes, click Restore, and it will automatically download, install, restore and update the phone for you. Don't download IPSW from other places.

You're making it way too difficult for yourself!

That error means it can't contact the Apple servers to restore. You have either messed with your hosts file, or you have ran TinyUmbrella which changes the host file.

To fix your host file, first close iTunes. Then open the host file to edit it.

On a Mac it's located at:

    /etc/hosts

On a PC it's located at:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\Host File

Make sure it looks like this:

    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

That's my current setup for hosts and it works flawlessly.

That's how I tried doing it initially and I have just been seeing the same error over and over. I was unable to update from 6.0.2 to 6.1 via itunes. Then, I d/l the IPSW and tried that method; no dice. Then tried it in DFU ; no dice.

Thanks actually I found out on YouTube (thank you YT) but hey, thank you aswell.

By the way - I wanna know how this happened, if you got the answer ofc.

Edit: Weird that TU would do that to my iTunes, really. Don't you think?

That is really strange I've never heard of this. You do have iTunes 11.0.1 installed, right?

Follow these instructions for DFU to be sure you're doing it right:

    http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/DFU_Mode

Then I would restart your computer, try a different USB cable for your phone, a different USB port, and try again.

If you are absolutely sure DFU mode and the IPSW isn't working then you must have a hardware issue with your iPhone.

Okay cool. Yes, TU can modify your host file, because it needs to in order to use saved blobs for downgrading purposes. Maybe you were just screwing around and it modified them - no big deal.

    Glad it worked out.
But the error message it gave you couldn't be more clear.
The file was corrupt so you just gotta delete and redownload it.

    Weird.
Maybe it has to do with apples servers getting hammered with downloads.
But I haven't noticed anyone else keep getting corrupt files over 12 times in a row like you:)

You got a badly downloaded IPSW.

The issue is on your side, either your internet connection is very choppy, bad downloader program, or just too many devices bogging your internet like microwaves, etc and making you lose wifi signal.

    Very good point.

I did mine during business hours but once everyone gets home and hits WiFi or plugs into iTunes they probably all tried updating at once.

One of the devs tweeted about Apple's servers being DDoS'd lol

He was just guessing if it was a wifi connection maybe it was having problems or even a direct line connection maybe was cutting out during the download.
He was just trying to help you know, a thank you would be nice instead.
