I swear companies always use theoretical estimates to make their products seem as if they have better battery lives.

Use real world averages! If customers can rely on your values they are more likely to trust in future products and the brand.

Battery life is almost as bad as the 'up to 20mbps' labels plastered over Internet service provider websites. No one actually gets those speeds!

Don't know or care about specs and numbers. My iPhone 5 is giving me better battery life than my 4, all while having a bigger screen and LTE. It lasts more than a whole day with normal use. Couldn't be happier. With that said, I'm in a high signal area. I'm sure others aren't as fortunate.

So you are saying that they used special dyes and they peel so easily? When you use the dye and scratch the colour you know what you see?black again not silver but black.
I say they used just a normal dye and this is why they peel off.
For now apple managed to get more negative publicity than the antenagate back in 2010.

I'm saying that they annodize the aluminum. I'm not sure what it is you're saying.

ANY annodized aluminum, when it is scratched, will reveal the silver aluminum below. No special dye fixes this.

My battery seems better so far than 4s which I think blows beyond the 4 did. So far so good and have LTE all around Los Angeles on Verizon.

I have had lots of phones, Always in airplane-mode they would last at-least a week,

I've had some last for two to even three weeks.

Those phones turn out to be the best alarm clocks.

I also notice Phones last longer on there final bar \ low batt time.

But then again its in a super duper low power mode. I can't see why when phones sleep they can't last longer.

My evergreen lasts about a week with cell mode on. So its great for life because I rarly charge it.

Also at night when I put it on for my alarm I tend to always put it in airplane mode. People always some how love to text me when its off, But if the phone is on I always get a text or a call,

So I guess that extends my cells life even more.

My battery life is actually fantastic. I went to kings dominion (amusement park in Virginia) and here were my stats:

Usage time: 5h 33m
Standby time: 14h 24m
Percentage: 8%

From my understanding usage time is how long the display is actually being used and standby time is the time since I unplugged it from 100%. When I was at the park all my location and wifi settings were on. I took lots of pictures, panoramas and HD videos. There were also a couple minutes of looking up YouTube videos. Auto brightness was on and it was a sunny venue so it was on max most of the time. 4G LTE signal from Verizon was in the range of 3-5 bars the whole time. If I still had my 4S and recorded that much media it wouldn't have fared as long.

Even doing "nothing" (phone is locked, etc.) on AT&T's 4G network (no LTE here yet) I've been losing 1-2% every few minutes. Once I switch to WiFi it goes back to normal. Hope this improves.

If you have no LTE in your area, have you tried switching off LTE? I'm not saying that you should have to do that (the phone should manage on its own and my iPad 3 does just fine with it), but just saying it might help you until a software patch fixes the issue.

Really? This is my AT&T LTE in Nashville. My Comcast cable tests regularly at over 30mbps.

Edit - also, just wanted to say my iPhone 5 battery life is fantastic. Better than my previous 4S, so far very happy with the new phone.

I, like most people, have noticed the battery drains faster when you are in a low signal area. Nothing new and the reason is obvious - the phone cranks up the power talking to the towers even when not i'm not talking. But I am happy with the battery life and get more than a day from it.

I just want my phone to last a full day of my usage. My iPhone5 does.

I played music for 3.5 hours yesterday. I used it from 7am to 7pm checking mail, browsing, with the occasional SSH and games. I had 3 bars all day. At the end of the day it was 1/4 full. Good enough for me!

The iPhone5 battery lasts longer than my iPhone4 did, no doubt.

There is something wrong with Sprint 3G on the iPhone 5 beware and stay away. The battery life was terrible. The Verizon LTE iPhone 5 had a 50% improvement on battery life. It's crazy and was the same even on WiFi. I returned the Sprint phone and am loving the Verizon one.

This phone definitely dies faster than the 4. I lose more with the phone locked than I ever did with the 4, and just in general use as well. I managed to get it to 8% in 8 hours using it for 3 hours. Lots of GPS (I was driving to and from NYC from eastern PA), so that kills it as fast as anything, but it still seemed to drop like a fly. It's not bad on WiFi though. Didn't pay attention to signal strength much, but I had at least 3-4 bars most of the time.

That's some insane upload speed. I was in NYC the other day and got 21/5. So 20 mbps is definitely not an outrageous claim.

You mean to say that weak signal degrades battery life?! Holy! I never knew this! What a revelation! What were these pathetic engineers thinking, releasing a phone without changing physics first. Gosh, Apple sucks!

Seriously? This is nothing new people.

I knew the battery wasn't going to be any better than the 4S despite what apple says. Their numbers are always way off.

I've seen many posts from people saying that can't wait for the longer battery life. Guess they were wrong and they are in the same boat as the 4 or 4S

Good battery life for a smartphone isn't impossible. My S3 has been going for 45hrs and is only on 50%.

Tremble, true believers!

Real world tests at 50% lower than Apple's exaggerated claims?

Now how are you gonna stream those dewy-eyed videos of Jony Ives talking about his precious beveled edges?

Cell phones have always had this issue. It's more an issue with LTE signal strength then anything to do with the hardware on the phone itself. Unless more LTE towers go up, all LTE phones going forward will have this issue.

Newsflash.

ALL Cellphones, even dumbphones are affected by signal strength, the weaker the signal, the phone has to boost power to the radio to maintain a connection.

Turn on Airplane mode on pretty much any dumb or smart phone, you'd be amazed how long the battery lasts without having to power the radio, I did that with my old Samsung Replenish Android Phone after I got my S3, I think with airplane mode on, it lasted almost a week before it died, my old 3GS would go almost a week to.

In other news, the pope is catholic.

Yeah that's what I was thinking when I saw the headline. I just thought this was a universal thing.
