I'm thinking they will probably just release a month later than the usual, or release the phone first and then iOS 5 slightly after.

My guess is that they want both Verizon and AT&T on the same product cycle and need until September to do so.

Lol this made me laugh. Do you honestly think Apple would delay a WORLD WIDE device just so Verizon and AT&T would be on the same product Cycle? This causes delays of even longer for international users. Perhaps a November/December release? And even later for other Countries... That's a lot of potentially lost money... Not a very good guess and Apple would never risk losing that much money.

anyone remember a thread not too long ago where a guy said he knows from a source that "there would be no iphone 5 this year"? You know, that thread where it was flamed by a bunch of people calling the OP a tard for thinking there would be no iphone 5 this year...yeahhh that one.

well given the light of things and TUAW's blog post about how parts for the iphone 5 haven't even been ordered, yeahhh I'd say that guy was right all along :p

EDIT: Snap, that threads just halfway down the page from this one lol. Well then.....

And I'd say he isn't.

Old situation:
March: iPad
June: iPhone
September: iPod touch

Not very equally distributed over the year. I'm guessing Apple wants to introduce new iPhones/iPods in September and new iPads in March, a nice six month gap. Somewhere between those events a new iOS will be announced/previewed/launched.

It's all because of the iPad, it just messes up the release cycle.

There will be an iPhone 5 this year, it'll just be later than usual.

I could definitely see it being pushed back, and yes... partially due to the Verizon iPhone. Just not in the way people would blame it. Most think it's to push the product cycle more on par w/ the Verizon release, but I'm thinking it's more due to the fact the Verizon iPhone came out so far into the cycle and the data they needed wasn't available from it til it was on the streets.

The Verizon iPhone is using the new Qualcomm chip that supports both GSM/CDMA (proved by the usual teardown). This is the chip they're going to in their future builds so they can essentially make an "all in one" design and maybe only make MINOR production line changes to the casing/etc for each provider should they "need" to separate them.

Since the Verizon iPhone came so far into the iPhone 4 lifespan I could see them pushing it back to provide a long enough time to see the chipset in action in the real world, make any adjustments they deem necessary from that data, and then incorporate that data into the iPhone 4S release (I really REALLY think they won't call it the iPhone 5 so they can call the LTE version the 4G and really push the 4G name recognition in advertisement).

If they weren't changing to a unified chipset I could see it staying on time, but since the GSM iPhone is basically getting a Verizon revamp in some ways to support the new chipset it's possible it was delayed.

I'm guessing they're going to a fall release.

Thoughts?

I hope they'll publish both Lion and iOS 5. It seems iOS 5 mostly but Lion can't get here soon enough imo.

Verizon iPhone is completely irrelevant for the iPhone release cycle. I'm guessing at least 80% of iPhones sales come from outside the US. They're not delaying the introduction of a new iPhone just because 0,01% of iPhone owners just bought their Verizon iPhone. That makes no sense.

Did you even read my post?

Because obviously you didn't if you're talking about how much of the iPhone sales come from offshore, etc. It has NOTHING to do with that, but instead the fact the new iPhones will be using a new Qualcomm chipset which does both CDMA/GSM (the Verizon iPhone is using it) so GSM and CDMA can rest on the same phone hardware. All iPhones (and other international and future CDMA versions) will be utilizing this chipset. Due to the complete change in the chipset it wouldn't be unheard of for them to be collecting data from a carrier already using that, and doing further testing in their own environments as well. This way they can release the most best future product since both CDMA and GSM phones will be using identical hardware with carrier differences coming from software, etc.

Let's try using that noggin to read the full post before spouting off irrelevant information.

Apple do not want to advertise a new product is coming because it will ruin sales of their current products, that’s why you typically get an announcement, followed by release just a few weeks later. If they announced WWDC and said 'come see the new iphone 5', how many iphone 4's do you think they'd sell between now and then?? The iphone has been announced at the last few WWDC's and as far as I know they have never advertised in advance that this would be the case.

I fully expect to see a new iphone announced at WWDC just like the last few years and released a few weeks later. I'm confident that this will be the case, not enough to bet my life savings on it, but pretty sure.

You have a good point there. But the rumors about parts not even being ordered yet, if true, points to a fall (or later) release.

This would be good news for iPhone 4 owners. They get another 6 months of life out of their purchase before it's "last year's model".

Interesting turn of events here. While I agree with apple in the sense that WWDC should really be focused on developers. They have used the media event to showcase phones.

What do you think of them holding a media event in the May (or April) to showcase the iPhone 5, or is it realistically going to be the fall?

Personally, it reinforces my decision that I'm happy I didn't wait until summer for the IP5. I'm enjoying the iPhone 4 now and when the IP5 finally does get released I can decide then whether to keep/sell my iPhone 4.

All the odds are against the release date of June 6th...

In a way it makes me happier as I'll be eligible for an update this August.
Maybe Apple will release it in September with the next gen iPods

I don't care about when as much as what. Give us a well engineered antenna attached to a phone that works well. Make it a modern large screen because it's a smartphone not a dumb one. So what if it gains a bit of size, many of us have been drawn to Android over the screen size of 4.3" alone. Notifications are important as are a host of other modern features lacking presently.

On the other hand, Im am going to be REALLY bummed if the iPhone 5 is pushed back to September. I'm still on the 3GS and have been constantly looking forward to getting the 5 in June/July. Its only 2 months but the anticipation for a long time now is killing me!!!

I'm in the same exact situation. I was really hoping they'd release the iPhone 5 this summer so I could upgrade. But it's not that bad, I suppose. I mean, I'm still very happy with my 3GS, so what's a few more months? :D

If it is pushed back I bet it will be because Apple decided they need to go on and move to LTE in the next iPhone and they need a little more time to get it ready. With the number of "4G" phones announced recently, a new iPhone still on 3G could look behind the times.

So that would be my bet if they push the launch back - they were going to stay 3G but decided they really need to go 4G due to competition from other phones.

Hmmm I kinda hope not because that means Id have to get rid of my unlimited data. Im not sure faster speeds are worth giving up unlimited data.

3GS owners shouldn't fret. You're not missing much with the iP4.

COMPLETELY disagree. The iPhone 4 is as big a jump as the iPhone 3G was from the original iPhone. Retina display alone makes it a huge jump...couple that with the internal upgrades and the exterior re-design and its an amazing jump.

We already established this in the beginning of the thread. Read the whole thing before posting snide remarks.

I'll do that provided you get your facts right before posting pissy rumour threads.

Deal?

And nowhere did I see the April 8th date mentioned, hence why I posted.

Sorry, still too "snide"?

Yes, and you're a tool.

Youre exactly right thats its "as big of a jump" as OG to 3G. You're wrong about the significance though.

The OG to 3G was a barely noticible upgrade. The 3G has all the exact same internals as the OG, they just bolted on a 3G radio. Processor, etc is all the same.

The 4 and 3GS also have the same internals. Prcessor, GPU, etc is identical.

So you didnt even know how right you were.
