So many scufftrolls on this thread.

And I'm sure most of them either:
1. Don't have the new iPhone 5
2. Has one but doesn't have the issue the people here are complaining about, but want to tell people frustrated about their phones to not care and judge them (because its not a big investment to them and a 800$ phone that is marketed as having impeccable build quality is chump change)
3. Have some sort of personal vendetta against people who want a quality product that doesn't come with nicks or dents out of the box

I don't even understand why they'd even bother posting here, they won't lose anything if they didn't

Could this be sabotage due to labor unrest? Reports tonight of riots at the Foxconn plant where the iPhone 5 BACKPLATE are made following a strike in March after workers did not receive a promised raise.

Riots Break Out at Foxconn Factory in China: Report
NBC News | September 23, 2012 | 07:39 PM EDT
Reports early Monday from China suggest that a mass disturbance or riots may have broken out at a Foxconn factory in the Chinese city of Taiyuan.

It is still unclear what exactly happened, but posts on China’s popular twitter-like service, Weibo, from users in the area show photographs and video of large numbers of police in and around the factory – many in riot gear – blocking off throngs of people.

Other photos show debris strewn around the Foxconn compound and in one case, an overturned guard tower.

According to popular tech blog engadget, the disturbance kicked off after Foxconn security guards allegedly hit a worker around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Censors in China have reportedly already started deleting pictures from the scene.

This is not the first time that Foxconn has had problems with its Taiyuan facility, which is reportedly responsible for the fabrication of the back plate of the immensely popular new Apple [ AAPL 700.095 +1.395 (+0.20%) ] iPhone 5. In March, strikes broke out there after workers did not receive a pay raise they had reportedly been promised.

Meanwhile, Foxconn’s Chengdu plant in Sichuan province also has dealt with riots. In June, scores of Foxconn workers there got into a fight with a local restaurant owner that had to be broken up by police.

Foxconn is the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer responsible for much of the current production and assembly of Apple’s popular line of products as well as a wide variety of popular tech toys ranging from laptops to gaming consoles.

But Foxconn has been under fire for years for its tough working conditions, including long hours, low wages and strict rules on representation. The company has also dealt with a string of suicides at its plants across China, which led to the company in 2010 installing anti-jump nets to prevent more suicide attempts.

The company has taken steps to improve working conditions in its factories by reducing work hours and raising wages for its front-line workers.

Still, perhaps wary of the continued negative publicity that has plagued one of its primary manufacturers over the years, Apple recently took steps to diversify its portfolio of producers, recently awarding much of the manufacturing of its new iteration of the iPad to another Taiwanese company, Pegatron.

All of this is much true and sad.

1.) I have one.
2.) I have the issue, and this phone was not cheap for me either.
3.) I like my products to be stellar, but theres a point where it's just a little ridiculous. A tiny scuff, that you won't even really see unless you look for it? Come on now.

I guess when I buy a new car, it better be perfect. Because you know, **** doesn't happen during manufacturing and transport.

...

You're screaming at Apple because you want a scuffless iPhone out of the box yet the moment you lay it on a counter or put it in your pocket it's going to scuff. You just want the right to scuff it first.

BJ

Very much true. It's my phone, I bought it new, if it breaks or failed, it better be me who did or cause it. In fact, YES.. I also buy the right to dent or nick it first.
So I can't blame people complaining that :apple: does a scuffing service out of a brand new iPhone. Is it a new service beside iCloud?

Likewise with cars, or watches, or any stuff you buy. When you buy new, you expect nothing less than that. Can you blame them?

Like I said, I know stuff breaks, or torn and worn eventually, but when they do because of me during MY ownership, then yes .. it's my business. And I don't go cry to mama over it.

he seemed like this was the first he heard of it,

Every single complaint made to apple is met with this response.

And it from this attitude that the quality of consumer goods is lowered while the prices increase.

I will say though, this is the first iPhone I went out and got AppleCare+ for. Just because I'm sure mine will scuff and I'm sure I'm going to want a fresh one after a while.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't buy a dented car. An you know what, some of the issues here are so visible you'd have to avoid lookin at it.

Apple has the right to sell you a phone with tiny scuffs since its going to get scuffed before you leave the store with it anyway.

Apple will tell you that a portion of their customers have unrealistic expectations and abuse the return process and that they're prepared to tell them they can take their business elsewhere.

Enjoy your Android.

At first my iPhone was flawless but after all these reports i went i shinned a bight led lamp and inspected it and found 4 dents in the back plate and it significant.
I'm very disappointed at Apple, They always talking about there amazing manufacturing and how its the best but apparently theses are big issues. Cant the Auto lazers detect the scuffs on it and reject the phone

A car and a laptop are not products meant to be crammed in a pocket or consistently brushed against other objects.

You must have a really cheap rubber watch because my $9,000 Rolex definitely has scuffs on the stainless steel bracelet.

Your expectations are foolish. Buy another cellphone. Stop whining about nothing.

BJ

I have a "scuffed" iPhone 5. I don't care much, it doesn't bother me now (although admittedly, it did when I opened the box and saw a chunk of black missing). I put a case on it and went on with my day.

Anyway, the point I wanted to make is that when you were buying your Rolex (assuming you bought it brand new) you definitely would have asked for an exchange immediately if you saw your new $9000 Rolex (assume its black in this scenario) with a small chunk chipped away and silver showing underneath, right on the front near the bezel. You're paying full retail for something in immaculate condition, not something cosmetically damaged. I'm sure you'd have a little frustration over that. Yeah, but it'll scratch eventually anyway, right?

I agree, some people get carried away when they get a new iPhone. I find it humorous the way they baby them. But it's not for me to criticize them for doing it, or tell them not to do it anymore, or make them feel bad about it. I don't know these people. I'm not gaining anything out of it. So what's the point? Live and let live.

Do you carry your TV or your car around in your pocket? Nope. Your analogy fails.

TV's drop all the time, poor wall mounting, falls off stand due to earth quakes or bumps into the TV. Essentially anything bought new, if it's damaged or has quality issues, it's pretty much okay in his eyes.

Last time I checked though, you can stream live TV on your iPhone..sort of like you are watching TV..that is pocket-able..who would have thunk?

I know right? I saw one guy post a picture and he had a dent right in the middle of the backplate. Last time I checked, I didn't just buy this off eBay as "used"..brand new usually stands for brand new, but I may be crazy..

Thought I would share my story.

So I received my iPhone 5 on Friday. Upon opening it from the packaging I noticed no scuffs or scratches. However there was a dust spec underneath the glass. So I called Apple, and they basically are shipping me out a new iPhone. (They charged me for $679 hold to my credit card). Once I ship the old phone back, the hold will be lifted.

My concern now, is what if the new iPhone they ship me is free from any dust specs, but now has the common scuff defect? Do I have to deal with Apple and get another claim started?

It seems as all the new iPhones are manufactured poorly with tons of defects. I also am waiting to see how Apple responds to all of this...

Well, to balance this all out, I'm using this phone without a case since Friday and I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever. I feel for those that do though; I hope your issues are rectified to your satisfaction. :apple:

Thought so

Smug. Doesn't change the fact that most of this nonsense is just rampant OCD. I feel for those of you who have genuinely messed up iPhones, but I'd say it's only a few out of everyone who has posted here.

I love the hysteria. I suppose many of you are new to Apple. If you lived through the actual quality control problems of the first few generations of the iPod (broken click wheels, non-functioning screens, DOA hard drives, misaligned cases etc. etc.) I doubt you'd be moaning about a couple of microscopic chips in your finish.

Holding Apple to an impossible standard isn't healthy for anyone IMO.

See? This is exactly what I'm talking about. All you nervous nellys have scared Jeff here to the point that he actually thinks EVERY iPhone has TONS of defects and is manufactured poorly. Of course nothing could be further from the truth.

Step out of the echo chamber, people.

Yeah, because being realistic = trolling. Nice try.

A $9,000 Rolex comes pre-scratched? Didn't think so.

You're not very bright, are you?

I took my scuffed one back today and the Genius told me they'd had a few and that due to the nature of the manufacturing process marks etc are likely. I was allowed to check out two and then accept one of them. Both had scuffs so I opted for the one with less. I left with this and then called Apple Support and said that I was pretty displeased to have to pick from two marked ones for something which was so new and they agreed so are sending me a new one. If that's not satisfactory the dance continues.

Neither is being the white knight great crusader of Apple and defending them to your dying breath. Reality check - your precious favorite Apple brand has flaws. It is not perfect. People like you don't like it when people are critical and say negative things about Apple and its products.

Life in Apple-land is not always going to be rainbows, balloons, lollipops and unicorns. There have been antenna problems. There have been battery problems. There have been yellow screen problems. And now there are scratched, beat up, scuffed problems. Perhaps none of those issues have happened to any of your iPhones. That doesn't mean they do not exist. Looking down your nose and being condescending towards those who have issues with their phones is troll like behavior.

And your $99,999 Rolex might have scratches all over it but my $79 Casio does not.

The damage on the edge of my phone ended up being sharp enough to slice my thumb wide open...

Still waiting on word from Apple about this. If they won't stand up to this, things will end up badly on their end. Personal injury through a product is a serious matter.
