"...we don't have any definitive answers'

Oh brother, here we go again. If I had a nickel for every unfounded guessing game...

This still seems (to me) to be more of a new, larger, gaming oriented iPod touch device than an iPhone. Maybe Apple is finally going to make more of a differentiation in the iPhone and iPod touch line? With the larger screen (if this is in the iPod touch family), it would possibly make more iPhone owners want to also own a touch for gaming (meaning Apple sells two devices to a customer instead of one). As it stands now, most who own an iPhone have no reason to purchase an iPod touch. And if this is in fact a larger Touch, and not an iPhone, it would make even more of a dent in the handheld gaming market. And I could see Apple doing that, with the likes of the Sony Vita to be released soon.

That actually makes a lot of sense and is a good explanation for some of the inconsistency of these rumors. A larger more game friendly iPod touch would appeal to a larger audience especially since mobile gaming has really taken off. I would hate to think however that we have to give up our long anticipated larger iPhone 5 screen for the "new" iPod to take off....

How can it be an iPod Touch when the speaker, mic, and headphone connector resemble the iPhone?

The iPhone is Apple's flagship product, not the iPod Touch, Apple wants to make iPod Touch owners buy an iPhone, not the other way around. It makes no sense for iPhone owners to buy an iPod Touch.

Regarding the OP. I'm confused about the form factor, a smaller but 3.7" screen would seem ideal, but the bigger 4" screen is looking promising. Regardless, the iPhone 5 is going to be a major upgrade, for everyone.

One thing i'm wondering, wouldn't this cause fragmentation?

It could go either way. I'd like to have a larger screen iPhone as well. Maybe they are releasing 2 (or more) iPhones. But there are definitive things (the FCC ID this week) pointing to at least one of those being very, very similar to the current iPhone 4. Or, that could be a T-Mobile or Sprint device (Sprint did just raise their early termination fee and have an event planned for Oct)...plenty of possibilities still left

I hope these are wrong or else Apple is going to start having multiple models of iPhones. I don't want a giant screen on a phone, that's what my iPad is for.

Isn't it a little bit strange that Apple hasn't announced any event yet? If the release really is in a month I mean? Anyway I hope there will be a world launch!

its not strange at all. apple is known for announcing their events with a week (or usually less) notice.

"Conclusion

Unfortunately, we don't have any definitive answers. "

Ah, gotta love MacRumors... conclusion: we can't conclude anything.

A completely redesigned iPod touch would explain a lot. Eg:
- all metal back speculation (ie no antenna)
- white headphone jack for iPod touch (a black and white model like the iPhone)
Inconsistencies in the iPhone 4S v iPhone 5 rumors

It's all coming together now *strokes beard*

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking! This looks more like an Ipod than an IPhone.

I think we will be getting an IPhone 4s in October, not an IPhone 5.

But I'll wait and see, I need to upgrade and I'll save the Upgrade until then!!

The problem with a larger screen would be to know what Apple would do with the screen resolution...

Either they keep the same amount of pixel in a bigger surface, in order not to mess with the apps and the devs by fragmenting the app market with a third resolution, or a bigger screen maintaining the iPhone 4's screen pixel density, obtaining a third resolution necessitating either a rewrite of apps or some ugly scaling function.

For my part I think Apple is going to maintain the iPhone 4 resolution (640x960), no matter the screen size keeping it as the basic iOS resolution for the near future (eliminating lower resolution devices like the 3GS).

You do realize the irony of you complaining about guesses on a RUMOR site, right?

You know what's gonna happen next don't you?

Samsung will sue Apple over it's iPhone 5 design infringing on things like the Samsung Galaxy Note.
Nice work Samsung (not), they foresaw the obvious design of the iPhone 5, got there first, then they'll call it theirs. You watch.

How exactly is Samsung going to be able to sue someone for infringing on a design they ripped off in the first place?

Hello and greetings from Germany.....

One crazy idea:

This thinner and wider Iphone is not the iphone 5, it is the 4s ( cheaper version ) and the N94 is the iphone 5....

I just love how Mac Rumors has already concluded that there will be an iPhone 4S and an iPhone 5!!

Case manufactuerers can be wrong, spare part suppliers showing actual parts cannot.

Mac Rumors should not conclude a thing on this one until the media event itself.

And if the iPhone is bigger then the Galaxy S2 as those dimensions suggest then it will be pretty pathetic if Apple only manage to fit a 4" screen won't it?

Hummers

In July last year Steve Jobs said "nobody is going to buy a bigger phone", actually calling competitors larger models, Hummers!

So unless he's had a massive change of direction (always possible), then I don't think these cases are for the next iPhone.

As I've said before here, I still think that the iPhone 5 will be largely the same as the iPhone 4, otherwise we would have seen some proper evidence by now, especially as it's going to be released in a few weeks. It's much easier to keep the new model a secret if it's the same as the old one!

Either way, hopefully we'll know more by Wednesday.

I wish I could find a source for this, but I remember reading some reports that stated Foxconn or whomever was actually manufacturing these devices for Apple were having a hard time due to it's extremely thin design. With that being said, everyone from WP7, to Android are producing devices with massively oversized displays. However these newer devices tend to blur the lines between a mobile phone and a tablet(Dell Streak, and now Samsung note anyone?). I suspect it will take Apple to come out and make a 4" screen not look so ridiculously bulky. I just hope the new iPhone remains pocketable, and stays portable.

What is with all this talk of Samsung's shipping model infringing on this "supposed" iPhone 5 that is just mere speculation at this point ?

How do you copy that which doesn't exist ?

Come on people, a little grasp on reality doesn't hurt.

If it was one, why make it so awkward to use in a landscape orientation? There's not a lot of games that use a portrait display.

Wow, a tapered edge could be a little awkward in landscape. That seems like it would unbalance the weight of the device. If this rumor is true, that's going to confuse my game designs. Right now, I generally choose landscape over portrait because it makes the games easier to port to other platforms... like full-screen Mac or maybe Apple TV in the future. Although, I've been trying to add four-way auto-rotational support when I can, as that lets the player choose the way that they want to hold the iOS device.

Maybe Apple wants to encourage portrait apps on the iPhone / iPod Touch. Unlike the iPad, the iPhone operating itself doesn't support auto-rotation. The app icons displayed are always in portrait... with the home button at the bottom. I doubt that though, as the biggest app on iOS is Angry Birds. Does Apple really want to mess with their biggest app?

An iPhone basically has four main functions... text, call, browse and play Angry Birds. :p

Android has seemed to slightly reversed the trend of shrinking smartphones. A lot of the new Android Phones that I've seen are much larger than the iPhone 4. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. My iPhone 4 feels like a good size. I don't think it needs to be much thinner, as I like that it feels sturdy... especially with a good case. Bigger is nicer for viewing, as it's easier to see the screen, but if the phone is too large it is less convenient.

If the phone is thinner, that's less room for a battery. With a larger screen, does that mess with power too? If the phone is super light and super thin, that doesn't mean anything to me if it's out of power.

Either way, hopefully we'll know more by Wednesday.

I'm surprised at how long Apple has taken to announce the iPhone 5. With the extra delay, I think it would be bad for the future of iOS if this phone disappoints. Something like a tapered edge seemed goofy to me, and makes me happy that I have an iPhone 4. I think that's how I'll know if the iPhone 5 is good. Once the official information is released, if I look at my iPhone 4 and it suddenly feels old... then Apple did a good job on the new phone. Although... the iPhone 4 was pretty revolutionary. And over a year later, it's still popular. So even if my iPhone 4 still feels new, that can be good for Apple too.

This is exactly correct! This site is in fact called "Macrumors" , not Macdefinitiveanswers.
