If it was one, why make it so awkward to use in a landscape orientation? There's not a lot of games that use a portrait display.
Wow, a tapered edge could be a little awkward in landscape. That seems like it would unbalance the weight of the device. If this rumor is true, that's going to confuse my game designs. Right now, I generally choose landscape over portrait because it makes the games easier to port to other platforms... like full-screen Mac or maybe Apple TV in the future. Although, I've been trying to add four-way auto-rotational support when I can, as that lets the player choose the way that they want to hold the iOS device.
Maybe Apple wants to encourage portrait apps on the iPhone / iPod Touch. Unlike the iPad, the iPhone operating itself doesn't support auto-rotation. The app icons displayed are always in portrait... with the home button at the bottom. I doubt that though, as the biggest app on iOS is Angry Birds. Does Apple really want to mess with their biggest app?
An iPhone basically has four main functions... text, call, browse and play Angry Birds.
Android has seemed to slightly reversed the trend of shrinking smartphones. A lot of the new Android Phones that I've seen are much larger than the iPhone 4. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. My iPhone 4 feels like a good size. I don't think it needs to be much thinner, as I like that it feels sturdy... especially with a good case. Bigger is nicer for viewing, as it's easier to see the screen, but if the phone is too large it is less convenient.
If the phone is thinner, that's less room for a battery. With a larger screen, does that mess with power too? If the phone is super light and super thin, that doesn't mean anything to me if it's out of power.
Either way, hopefully we'll know more by Wednesday.
I'm surprised at how long Apple has taken to announce the iPhone 5. With the extra delay, I think it would be bad for the future of iOS if this phone disappoints. Something like a tapered edge seemed goofy to me, and makes me happy that I have an iPhone 4. I think that's how I'll know if the iPhone 5 is good. Once the official information is released, if I look at my iPhone 4 and it suddenly feels old... then Apple did a good job on the new phone. Although... the iPhone 4 was pretty revolutionary. And over a year later, it's still popular. So even if my iPhone 4 still feels new, that can be good for Apple too.
