Mine has a small scratch by the dock connector, but not enough to deal with exchanging it.

I'm wondering if shipping was just so damn pissed off that they were just throwing the packages around. Glad they took care of you OP

I have two very small nicks, one on the front plastic edge, one on the back aluminum frame. Only thing is, I don't want to play the swapping game with apple. I took a look at their display models today and a lot of them had some kind of factory defect, most a lot worse than mine. I don't want to be the person standing there opening 7 boxes to get the perfect iPhone. I'll slap a case on it never see it again.

Just got home and opened the box. Took off the front plastic and immediately noticed a 1 inch scratch on the glass by the front camera. Had the Bodyguardz screen protector ready to go. If I didn't get the 64GB with Applecare + maybe I would have keep it. After $600+ I want it to be perfect.

Does anyone else have an issue where their power button is extremely loose? I compared mine to my 4S and the 4S feels firm and solid whereas my 5 creaks and can easily be moved around in its place. In addition, it's sometimes very hard to press down. Is this worth an exchange?

My power button is extremely solid and barely moves around. I'd say give it a shot. Don't think it should be loose at all.

Maybe they all got scratched in the box when they were handled by courier companies.

Can we blame the packing ?

No, not at all. The phones don't move in the boxes. U could drop the box off a 50' cliff and it wouldn't damage the phone like the marks in the pics. No way it happened after it was packaged.

More then likely, it's the machine that bevels that edge causing those nics and scratches. .

Mines is loose compared to my 4, but not worth taking back, phone is perfect otherwise, next phone could be worse (nicks/dents).

Well, I just took a chance and swapped it, they pretty much did it no questions asked. This one is flawless, with zero marks and no loose buttons. :D

You've got the right attitude.

It's sad that a company like Apple that presents itself as a premier company, has such poor quality control. They've declined instead of improved. It's as though they know how much they can get away with and have no desire to live up to their claims of excellence.

My first heavily scratched phone was exchanged. The second is better, yet it's still scratched. I'm done wasting time with exchanges, as I've been through this before.

I have no desire to get a perfect one, just one that's like new. Minor marks wouldn't be nearly as bad as the 1/4" scratches on this one.

Oh well, it would be fair to say "it's only an iPhone".

I'm a UK customer who purchased the Black 64gb iPhone 5 via the Apple store online. I have exactly the same issue, I opened the box following delivery this afternoon and noticed a small nick on the chamfered edge just above the sim slot. From the evidence here it does appear to be the new manufacturer process that creates the chamfered edge that is causing the problem. I would add that the all the packaging was immaculate so I therefore conclude this issue was present before the packaging process at the factory.

I hope Apple hold their hands up on this one and don't accuse loyal customers of causing the damage themselves.

i have a small notch in the same spot. I only noticed it after looking at the phone for defects. I also have a small ding on the back - but these are tiny; i'll probably live with it.
