A few days ago, I started noticing two white vertical lines down the front of my phone. Simultaneously, my phone started freaking out:
- when I try to text, the phone randomly doesn't let me, or fills in a bunch of letters I never touched
- during a call, the phone randomly drops calls
- when watching a YouTube video, it randomly switches to another video
- sometimes I'm not able to listen to a voicemail, even though I'm touching the "play" button several times
- the phone takes forever to power down
...and various other issues

Help! I got this phone in Oct of 2014 and I'm sure it's out of warranty.

I am afraid your old friend is in need of more help that anyone here can offer. You could take it to the Apple store but they likely will give you bad news.

Have you tried restoring the phone back to its factory settings? The only unfortunate thing you would have to do is rather than restore from back up, set up the phone as new. Unfortunately you would lose all your app data and text messages, but you could see if that works.

The other scenario is that you make an appointment at your local Apple Store to have a Genius look at it. Yes, the phone is out of warranty, but they could potentially diagnose what the issue is (which from the sounds of it, probably won't be good news).
