I agree. It needs to be so small that I hardly know that it's in my pocket, but big enough to have a useable screen. Apple have judged this balance perfectly and it got even better when the made the whole thing thinner with the iPhone 4.

I'm nervous about any antenna redesign because I really hope that they find a way to optimise the existing iPhone 4 "antenna on the outside" concept and don't feel the need to revert back to an internal antenna that would presumably bump up the thickness again.

Me too I hope they find a way to "cover" the antenna maybe with a clear coating or something like that. About the screen I feel most companies try to use that as a hook so they can say "We have something bigger than the iPhone". But in the end the iPhones screen size is just perfect for everything.

I would like it to be a bit more weatherproof, so that I don't need to worry about a few drops of rain (or sweat) to impact the device.

i hope they build the iphone 5 out of liquid metal, so i don't have to worry about dropping it! it'll just bounch back into my hands:]

What should the new iPhone 2011 have??

Here is my wishlist:

1) Must Have: HSPA+ (Evolved 3G+), Nice to have: LTE (3.9G or 4G)

2) AWS Version of iPhone: In Canada, providers who use the AWS give you great data and voice prices while the rest charge you outrageously!

3) 8MP Camera with 1080p Video FHD Video Recording @ at least 24fps :)

4) Triple Microphones (Stereo Mics + One Noise Cancellation)

5) Stereo Speakers! They still don't have that...

6) EVEN thinner! :)

7) Cheaper price for unlocked (Around $550 CAD)

8) At LEAST 1.2GHz Dual Core ARM Cortex A9 Based Apple A5 Chip with 1GB RAM

9) Better GPU

10) Voice Time! So you can call over HSPA+ or 4G!

11) Dual LED Flash

12) At least a 3.7" Screen

13) A Better Retina Display (Ex. a Retina Super AMOLED (RSAMOLED) Screen :))

14) iOS 5 (Widgets?)

15) A new antenna design

So what do you want in the new iPhone 5?

You missed nuclear powered and self-repairing nano technology.

It's wish lists like this that get people all hyped over a non-existant product.

The iPhone 5 will more than likely be altered enough to make it stand out and erase the iPhone 4 bad press. I just hope that a multi-carrier version is made to kill of the Android sales.

I wonder if the "spot" could be moved to the top of the phone. Between the headphone and sleep/wake button.

4. Because Stereo recording is SOOO necessary in a phone, right!

Would make a lot of portable recorders redundant. I would use it quite a bit.

What I wish for in iPhone 5 is a mechanical switch that will stretch it to a 7" iPad.

What actually would be good:
- A lot less glass
- More countries to sell the phone unlocked
And for the iOS5:
- A partition of storage to be used for Bluetooth and USB file transfers
- Use music from the library as ringtones and SMS tones
- Wireless syncing

I'm honestly not really sure what I'd want.

I guess cheaper price, better battery life (never can have too much), and faster processor (cause you never can go wrong with a faster processor).

Other than that, not really sure there is any new features I really care about seeing. The camera is fine for me now (a better camera wouldn't really entice me that much), I like having video camera ability, the GPS is pretty good now (as compared to before), I have no issues with antenna, and I just can't think of anything really off the top of my head.

Well, I suppose one feature would have me drooling... some how managing to get an actual optical zoom in the camera (digital zoom is pointless, you can do that in photoshop and it just gets grainy).

What an original thread, how come no one else has ever thought about creating a next generation wish list?

So you want all the, but thinner and cheaper, get ready to be disappointed.

I also find more than half of the OP's requests quite impossible. I agree with you: "Get ready to be disappointed."

screen size will never change

That's true, it would mean that over 300,000 apps must have to change their interface (which is almost impossible as seen on the iPad apps more than 7 months later and we still see that 50% of the useful apps are just 2X pixel).

1 - Battery!Battery!Battery!
2 - 3.7"-3.8" display
3 - New antenna design
4 - 8mpx cam in the back / improved front cam
5 - Better gpu
6 - Better cpu
7 - 32/64GB storage instead of 16/32

I would not mind it'd become thicker to accommodate all these changes.

It's funny.....I'm pretty sure my droid x does all those things :)

You've summed up my thoughts exactly. I'm not a keen photographer so I never have a "real" camera with me and even forget to pack one when I go on holiday about half the time (when airline security ask me what electrical items I have is when I get the "d'oh, I forgot the camera" moment). For social gatherings it's no big deal because the iPhone camera is perfectly good enough but for scenic holiday snaps then 90% of the time it's useless without a zoom. Integrating a zoom would need to be done with no increase in phone size when the camera is inactive, and I realise it's a dream right now, but if/when it can be done (properly) then that will be a hugely significant new feature.

Don't dismiss digital zoom completely. You never know, it might be the route to what we want. Speaking for myself, I don't want optical zoom per-se, what I actually want is high quality zoom and I don't care if that is implemented optically or digitally. Because of sensor limitations it isn't possible to get high quality 3x digital zoom (for instance) and, sadly for us, it isn't currently possible to get 3x optical zoom into an iPhone body either.

Now, if there was some miracle sensor technology that could deliver a 45MP sensor in the same space and with the same quality as the current 5MP sensor, and a lens to match, then digital 3x zoom would be clipping a 5MB square out of the middle of the 45MP sensor data (and happily the middle of the lens is the part that has least optical distortions) so that would give a workable level of high quality zoom. In fact I'd say that you don't need to get to that level, I was pretty happy with 2MP snaps from a normal compact camera and definitely happy with 3MP so if one only wants to crop out 2MP or 3MP from the middle of the frame for a 3x zoom then one is talking about sensors of 18MP and 27MP respectively. Again, not possible within the size constraints today but maybe one day.

I realise that both the optical and the digital possibilities for high quality zoom are impossible with today's technology, and for some time to come I suspect, but I'm just saying that there are two possible routes to get what we want.

On the other stuff I am also running out of things that I want. I agree with all yours. I would prioritise improving battery life over improving performance but the one thing that I would add to your list is doubling the flash capacity. I would really like a 64GB phone since, once all my music is on my 32GB phone, it will be full.

I'd settle for ToDo items syncing from iCal, but that's just me. I guess the only other thing I'd like to see is the ability to use SD cards to increase storage, but that'll never happen.

I want better battery life, more storage, more ram, faster cpu, better sensor for the camera. I don't expect a huge update until 2012-2013. There won't be a redesign, maybe just a coating over the antenna.

I am sure Steve and Team will do a better job on the next Version whatever it may be nick named, however you just added a ton of features and expect the price to drop??? or am I not reading right because you can not have your cake and eat it to.

Apple has taken a lot of heat on the iP4 so I am sure the next one will be well thought out and tested, kind of like the 3GS was.

IMO i think the upgrade will be like 3G to 3GS. Same design with an insulated antenna. Spec wise maybe a 6mp with 65gb option. I wouldn't mind a 3.7 inch screen
but that would have less PPI,
unless apple makes an even higher res display.

It better make me a sandwich and fold my clothes or I'm going to give it a pair of black eyes.

i hope it sorts through useless (this one) threads on macforum and deletes them

I'm not sure which I'd prioritize, battery life or performance (I guess battery life by a little more cause the battery life is worse than the performance is).

I can't believe I forgot about doubling flash capacity. That was really my only gripe about the changes they did to the iphone 4 (I was kind of annoyed they didn't have a 64GB version. Not that I think I'd need it, but that was enough that I'd not worry about filling it. At 32GB it is probably enough, but I still could foresee myself eventually wanting more).
