absolutely NOT getting an iPhone 5. Reason: iPhone 4 doesn't drop calls or reception in Australia;)

At least here on MR, a good chunk of people seem to upgrade their hardware, be it iPhones or Macs, with each revision.

Also, this rumor could very well be true. With the advances that Android is making, and HP's push for webOS and Win Phone 7 launching, Apple might move the iPhone up to a 6-month lifecycle.

And the sad thing is that quite a few Apple cultists will buy the phone every six months...

Honestly, if it did come out, I'll sell my iP4 on eBay and get the new one. Heck, Android comes out with a new phone every 2 months and always screws over their customers.

Could you please explain how newer technology improvements "screw over costumers"? Technology always improves, it's the same for cars, televisions, phones, mp3-players, cameras, no matter what you buy there's soon gonna be something out there that's a little bit better

"...the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon." -Steve Jobs, in an open letter about dropping the price of the original iPhone by $200 two months after it was released

My best guess is that the next version iPhone will significantly move the game on, and not just be a redesign of the antenna. I believe that the when Steve Jobs takes the stage to introduce the next iteration of the iPhone, he will simultaneously address the iPhone 4's attenna issue while denying it exists. There will be new hardware and software features and enhancements; considering the stiff competition from Android (even though Android is inferior), they really can't afford not to. And the next iPhone may indeed come out before June 2011. If you've just purchased an iPhone 4, your head may explode, and that will be funny, but forget about storming the gates or joining a class-action lawsuit or "demanding" that Apple allow a straight trade-in for the new model. It's just "life in the technology lane".

There's no doubt now that the iPhone is going Verizon. It's become painfully obvious with all the signs that have popping up: AT&T trying to keep investors from worrying about losing iPhone exclusivity, to making a Chinese iPhone, and now this leaked CDMA chip order from Apple.

Okay this is all speculations and no body knows but if i had to guess I think they won't release a new one in January.

that would cause an uproar to those who purchased an iphone 4 5 months prior. I think Apple can certainly wait 5-6 months (June 2011) to announce the iphone 5.

Exactly. It's likely going to be the Verizon version of the iP4 that is going to be released (possibly with insulation or something to prevent the antennae issue).

Market share is going to win this war. The one with highest market share can deliver the biggest buying audience for developers' apps. Microsoft has proven that one OS across many hardware manufacturers spells financial success. With that said, it's quite obvious we are going to see iPhone on Verizon and possibly T-Mobile and Sprint as well. It would be silly for Apple not to do this given that they already have a GSM phone that's ready for T-Mobile immediately. Whatever changes need to be made to create a CDMA version are well worth the cost given the untapped market of Verizon subscribers alone.

The only reason we haven't seen this yet is because of Apple's exclusivity agreement with AT&T, which is going to expire. If iPhone comes to Verizon, I will be the first to ditch AT&T. I think AT&T is vastly overestimating how many customers it stands to lose. Apple needs to do this ASAP in order to stem the Android tide. There are probably quite a few Android owners who would love to make the switch to iPhone once it becomes available on Verizon. We're going to see a cannibalization of the Android market share, but to what extent is anyone's guess. The longer Apple waits, the more it loses to Android.

I'm inclined to believe we'll see the iPhone 4 going to Verizon in January. I just don't think they'll continue to have a staggered release if they do this.

If we see the iPhone 4 on Verizon in January then I'm guessing one of two things will happen:

1. iPhone 5 coming out for Verizon and AT&T in June 2011

2. iPhone 5 coming out for Verizon and AT&T in January 2012

Then they'll hop back on the once a year release schedule.

Having AT&T and Verizon get the new phones six months apart would definitely help Apple with maintaining supply.

I thought the GSM iPhone's were going to continue to be made at Foxxcon and the CDMA versions at another manufacturer. Keeping the same release for both would be a big reason to bring in another factory.

It's all hypothetical until it actually happens though.

Having two different manufacturers is nice and all but you would still have limited quantities of some of the components.

I'd say it was very unlikely. If there was some sort of new model, I'd think it'd just be a very minor design improvement done quietly.

I see an iPhone appearing from Verizon in Jan. This will stop years of whining about AT&T, Apple fanboys will then scramble to come up with something else to worry about.

Android will become an even greater threat to Apple as the OS matures, and even more units are sold. It's the one threat Apple has no control over. Proof of this fact is right here for all to see. Thread after thread bashing Android. If Google was not a threat, these threads would not exist.

I have both Android & iPhone. They both have excellent performance and functionality. Because they are fundamentally different I see no compelling reason to compare them, I simply enjoy them both.

It's great to be a multi-platformist. One avoids suffering the angst of the typical Apple fanboy.
