I am assuming this is just your guess and you have no sources to back this up..?

Yeah really, there is so much evidence against the OP's theory and yet none to back it up. He's just making this up. Trying to delude himself into thinking he'll see the 5 soon?

Well, why not? The production infrastructure hardly needed a change. The A5 is already being produced for the iPad2, so chip supply on that is already established;

I think that's exactly it. Apple is gunning for the quantity and trying to make as many phones as possible. They basically said "nah, screw you internet geeks," and will try their darnedest to supply as many phones as possible while expanding the number of carriers.

It's an interesting attempt as their biggest challenge has always been ramping up the production when the new device is announced. If they changed the design now, we probably would've seen a shortage much worse than the iPad 2 launch fiasco. But because they know how to make the iPhone 4 design, they figured it'll be the best way to make money and they get one more year to perfect the production of the next generation design.

Of course the danger is that the old design just might not generate enough "buzz" to generate demand and Apple will be forced to lower the price or decrease the production. This will be an interesting story to watch for everyone but I don't know if I want to bet against Apple.

Seems like a rather bizarre theory.

However it may be that Apple simply is toying with us, something they are not the slightest bit hesitant to do if it means making more money.

Leading many of their followers around by mere words, Apple's got many by the family jewels and lined up waiting for the next command.

Apple has become an odd lot. Who knows what the magicians at Cupertino are up to when not fantasizing about the "Space Ship" :D

This movie is one of the best I have watched in a very long time.

It's so entertaining to observe the power they have over live subjects.

Apple just doesn't want Samsung to copy iPhone 5 new design. if iPhone 5 was announced yesterday, we would instanly know what Galaxy S3 would look like:D

More like, Apple didn't want to release an iPhone 5 that looked like the Samsung Galaxy S2. And then get sued for it.

But OP, great post. And i agree with your insight, but i guess that design might not see the light of day. And if it does, then it won't be until next year this time.

I agree it was delayed because of litigation....and I don't think there was gonna be a 4S and a 5

Yes, as I said before, it's all 100% speculation. I'll see the 5 when it comes out, I'm not disappointed in the 4S at all, but let's face, a lot of people, and probably a lot even within the sacred walls of Apple, are scratching their heads at the absence of an iPhone 5 yesterday. My post is just pure speculation on why there was no iPhone 5 yesterday, why Tim Cook hardly spoke at all, why the tapered design was floating around, and why the 3GS is still being offered.

I have a few thoughts on the iPhone 5, and I think it's ready and was supposed to be announced yesterday by Tim Cook. However, given the earthquake/tsunami, production wasn't ready for an October delivery. Here's some food for thought:

  • Tim Cook had a prepared presentation for the Keynote, but it was to introduce the iPhone 5 after Scott introduced the 4S, this is why Tim didn't present
  • The new 3-model setup was to be iPhone 4 for free, 4S for $99, and iPhone 5 for $199. The 3GS won't run iOS5 nearly as well as the 4, Apple really didn't want to sell the newest OS on hardware that can barely handle it
  • Tim couldn't announce the iPhone 5 and then say it'll be ready in 4-6 months, that would cannibalize into 4S sales and really hurt their shareholder confidence
  • Upgrading current production infrastructure to build 4S over a 4 is a lot easier than building up a whole new production infrastructure for an iPhone 5, hence the delay in the iPhone 5 and not the 4S

After the tapered model leak and a lot of case makers on board with it, along with the 16 month hiatus it just seems a little odd that the 4S (despite it being awesome, I'm very excited about it) is the only phone. Apple is successfully selling a 3GS alongside a 4, so obviously having 2 or 3 models in stores is a worthwhile product endeavor. Yesterday would have been a monster success with a two-product introduction, Apple knew it, and that was the plan until production prevented it.

My 2 cents.

Now this one takes the cake! The earthquake and tsunami, really?? This really is the best one I have read so far and I have spent more time that I should in the last 17 hours.

The Apple roadmap for Iphone is a yearly refresh cycle for the "guts" of the phone and a two year cycle for the form factor of the phone. 3G and 3GS, 4 and 4S. This years release being "late" is due to fine tuning and perfecting ios5 AND moving the release to fall. iPads will release in the spring and phones and pods will release in the fall. Apple never intended to release a new form factor this year, bank on it!

expect iPad 3 in March or April 2012
expect iPhone 4G or iPhone 5 in October

I believe Tim Cook didn't speak much is because he is not as good as Steve at putting on a show and they will start having more speakers at these events going forward.

The tapered design is nice but I don't think Apple would ever put that out. It's not how Apple designs, it's not "even".

3GS- simple 2nd best selling phone. And it very well may stay that way with its new price.

This sounds to like how the discussion started for 3GS. When 3GS came out they all said there is going to be a new iPhone in January.

Oh how i remember those days. Then January came and went and no new iPhone.

It will be the same this year as well.
