My bad, so im guessing in Euroland its different.
On my 4s i can only 'Enable 3G' under Setting\Cellular, even though my carrier supports 4G\LTE.

PS - So nice to see old iOS (6, right?) :)
Well, it's kind of a marketing term (4G). It's HSPDA+ on T-Mobile which can be thought of as 'enhanced 3G'. It's faster than 3G but not as fast as LTE.

As to iOS 6, it was nice while it lasted. But my son, who is unfamiliar with jailbreaking decided he wanted to sacrifice that for iOS 9.3.5 and the ability to use later version apps.

As much as it pained me I updated him. :(

I've got my old 5c as a backup but yet to bring myself to use it part time tho. Sticking with my Samsung a little longer. Always get an urge to flip back to iOS as my iPad doesn't always scratch that itch.

I know quite a few people still using a 4s. I agree the 5 is still a competent phone. It's a bit of a sad state when a 4 year old [handheld] computer is unusable by so many. Especially because it can do most of what any current equipment can do, screen size notwithstanding.

In retrospect, the A6 chip in this phone must have been one hell of an upgrade.

The iPad 2 and iPad Mini 1 both had the A5 and were pretty much made unusable by iOS 8. And now here comes the iPhone 5 with an A6 and it's still working great with iOS 10. What the heck happened between those two chip models??

The icon says 4G on my son's phone. We're on T-Mobile.

With T-Mobile there's 4G and then there is LTE. My son does not get LTE because the phone is not capable of it.

It is still mind blowing that once upon a time we thought this was a big screen size lol

Indeed, no other iPhone has aged better than the iPhone 5 and runs its last OS as good as it, probably because the A6 was 2.5x faster than the A5 in terms of CPU and has the same amount of RAM as two of its successors.

I'm using a 4s now. I wanted to get top dollar for my 6s so I sold it a month before the 7 was announced. I found my 4s for $35 new in box, so it was a no brainer. It's only 8gb, it's slower than I'm used to and I can't talk/surf on data, but it's a great little phone. Once some of the bugs are worked out of the 7plus, the 4s will be backup phone. But for now it's getting the job done.

You have the phone my son has.

Only yours was NIB. Lots of fun hunting down a box and all the original accessories for his phone though. I even managed to get the manual, Apple stickers and sleeve for him.

That 4G literally means nothing. The speed is the same as 3G if not a tiny tiny microscopic hair faster. 4S' never supported 4G & or LTE the icon is just an icon.

You are quoting an earlier post of mine. A few posts down I mention that it's a marketing ploy and that we're realliy dealing with 'enhanced 3G' or HSPDA+, not LTE or 4G. I'm very much aware of this.

The phone gets slightly better than 10mbps down. While it's not 4G or LTE it's certainly fast enough for my son. I chose the 4s on purpose because I knew it was not LTE capable. This way he doesn't use up all his monthly data (2GB) in one sitting. The nature of the phone is going to limit his data usage.

Well then we are on the same page lol. I love my 4S, still using it, but I wish it supported LTE. If I had an iPhone 5 on iOS 6. I would probably rarely ever use my 6S ever again. I miss the good ole days of Apple, where it was all simple and not a scam that software would cripple after 2 years. I would love to use an older phone for a few years til I can't anymore, but since software is such an a** on iPhones, you can't do that, because app devs cut you and Apple does too by destroying your phone. iOS isn't a hardware intense OS, it makes no sense that iOS all of the sudden started ruining older devices. Why does it seem that Apple is ashamed on their older products? "It's a marketing scam to keep you buying new products all the time." Ok... well if a company was proud of a product they made, I sure as hell wouldn't make it run like putrid cow sh** and ruin its reputation that we took so much pride in making. Ugh... what happened to Apple?

Apple still supports a 4 year old device with the latest operating system. Much much better than any Android device.

However, technology must keep marching on and older devices cannot be supported forever.

My wife is certainly no early adopter, so she is very happy with my old gear every time I upgrade.
When I got my 6 plus, she got my 5. Now that i have my 7 plus, she has the 6 plus.

Now I've got the 5 back in my hands, I'm keeping it as a backup. I've been spending some time playing with it, and I find it surprisingly capable considering it is already 4 years old now. Even on iOS 10 it seems to run just fine, with some stutter, but not all that bad. I would have no problem using this on a daily basis still, but recognizing that the 5's days are numbered give the fact that it's the last 32bit iPhone.

The 4s even would be a just about fine phone. Great to have around as an audio recorder, seconds microphone, podcast in the pocket, timelapser, video recorder, second camera, backup tool when you're capturing moments with the family. Even if you go on a amusement park ride, just using a phone without a sim to record the experience just makes you feel more comfortable in case you drop it or it gets stolen, etc.

These devices are great machines, just because they don't run the latest stuff 100% how the 7 would, or have all the features, doesn't make them bad devices. They are still great little computers in your pocket.

To be honest, I regret selling my devices to my family members just to help pay for the next upgrade. I wish I had more Apple stuff just lying around so I can grab it when I need extra ears or eyes. Or just want to have a roadtrip and give someone a phone to play some games on or watch some youtube clips.

I doubt I will be moving it down the line again when I upgrade. Sorry family.

My backup phone is an iPhone 5s. It's still going great.

5s will last a long time with 64bit architecture

There is a certain luxury to having an old device that does not have much resale value left. I like to use my old phones when I go to the beach or other situations where theft might be a risk - I can hide them with not too much worry if they get stolen.

Sometimes people feel they have no value left. But I think it's worth to consider how much 'time' and 'convenience' they give you ; value wise .. not only that, sometimes a 50 or 100 bucks investment to replace a screen or battery (or both) is an investment that gives you a great phone you can use an extra two years.

Its not the fastest phone out there, but i can run all my apps with their latest version on my 4s even though im still on iOS8, unless you where talking about iOS10 or some heavy game that demands the latest hardware. About the latest features are you talking about 3D Touch and ApplePay? or camera, CPU, GPU and RAM? if its the latest, i wouldn't call them 'features', more like hardware evolution...

The 4s is still great compact phone! with timeless Design :)

having 6+ for two years already, i still consider iphone5 as one with best design EVER
now, i would rather take se than 7plus

wow, two ends of the spectrum. The form factors are so radically different, I don't even consider an SE and 7 plus as comparable as they address totally different use cases.

I know that support is longer on iOS, but on Android you can stay on an older version for quite a while because App devs support the older versions longer than they do on iOS. My brother had a Galaxy S3 on 4.3 Jellybean and could use the latest version of snapchat far longer than my 4S on iOS 6.1.3 that was as old as it at the time. "You should just update!" We don't want to because our devices are running well on this older version. That Galaxy ran well on 4.3 and had a lot more support from app devs than my iOS 6 4S. Apple's support system doesn't really work all that well and really screws you over. You have 2 options, older iOS that is zippy fast and bad app support, or new iOS with less than pleasing lag and slow downs with the latest apps.

Meanwhile on Android, older version that runs well and good app support, or new version with around the same app support if not, a tiny bit more.

Google's way is a lot better than Apple's. it really pisses me off on how much Apple really scams you, just to get what you want. They are too greedy with money really trying to force people to upgrade phones so they can get the speed and apps they want. I can see why too. If I had an iPhone 5 on iOS 6 and app devs still supported it, then I wouldn't upgrade anytime soon. I would sell my 6S in an instant if I could get a 5 with iOS 6 with great app support. On Android that's easy. App devs still support old versions and its way more easy to downgrade an Android than an iPhone.

I think the 4S I would get frustrated with. Especially on iOS 9.
I would too. I set my son's 4S up with 9.3.5 and there's no way I'd use it myself.

My son, on the other hand not having used an iDevice from iOS 5 up to iOS 9 has no idea so he's perfectly happy with it.
