its a great design, but it seems very hopeful to me. We've yet to see a phone even come close to being able to have such little bezel above (or to the sides) of the screen...the size of the extra electronics around the earpiece (camera, sensors, earpiece, etc) just takes up too much space

Can't say that I don't like the concept. It's sexy.

While I'd love Apple to get rid of the glass backing, I just don't see Liquid Metal being a good substitute mostly because of the cost. I could see them using it for internals and/or certain parts of the exterior, however.

I'd also like to see them eliminate the home button entirely and go to gestures to navigate. Another option would be to move the home button to the side or back of the device. This would allow for the screen size to grow to the 4" that everyone is predicting while maintaining the current size of the phone itself.

Keep in mind, they can't use liquid metal where they wouldn't use regular metal. Liquid metal is a combination of 3 or more metals to give it superior flex and light weight, but it's horrible for use as a back because the antenna signal can't get through it any better than regular metals.

Someone posted in another thread that Liquidmetal can be made transparent to signals if the right combination of ingredients are used. Not sure if that is true, but I'm not ruling it out. The structure isn't crystalline like other metals, so there will be differences in the possible properties.

The concept pics do look nice, although there are some sharp edges that mean it may not be comfortable to hold, and still looks like a fragile glass back.

I like the idea of the centrally mounted headphone jack so that is is out of the way when holding the phone in either landscape orientation.

EDIT: Thought the screen wasn't vertically symmetrical. Looked at one of the other images that wasn't main. It is a virtual button on the screen. Don't think that is very likely. The Home button requires zero knowledge to use, I don't think it will disappear, even to a part-time virtual button.

I just don't understand how liquid metal is a selling point. It's not going to make your phone work any better. It is strong, but as has been pointed out it will not play well with cell signals so I don't expect to see a totally liquid metal phone like, ever. It's a cool metal and all that, I am just not understanding why everyone is so excited to get a phone that has a hinge or a screw made of the stuff.

The other thing is, no matter what they make the phone out of, on launch day there will be a hundred posts from people who managed to break their new phone within 5 minutes. Two years ago there were a few million people on this forum who thought the "gorilla glass" in the iPhone 4 was going to be the end of shattered screens.

Ive had my 4 for almost two years now and no cracked screen. Ill be fine with the whole phone being glass like now. But if they do have a different back thats more durable id be ok with that too. Id like the mockup they had from last year its like a mini iPad.

Very good information but you know people think otherwise.

The home button and sim card trays have already surfaced for the next iPhone, so there is no way anything close to that mock up will happen.

Why is it so glossy? Surely common sense would tell people that a phone, something that's in contact with your skin whenever it's in use, should be designed to resist fingerprints.

home button yes then this mockup won't work but the sim tray can work with this mockup i think. if it keeps the same band as the 4 and 4/s
