This happens from time to time: I wake up (too late) and see that the alarm has had no sound at all.

Then when I check the phone, there's no ringtones, no alarms, no alerts, no message sounds, no sounds from the apps, no keyboard click sounds, absolutely nothing coming out of the speaker.

Been late from work several times because of this.

Yes, the mute switch is off. Yes, the volume is on. No, there's no dirt or dust in the headphone plug. I have never once even used the Do not disturb function.

Only rebooting helps.

But then this happens again in a while.

The thing that really disturbs me that this is my THIRD (3rd) iPhone in a row that has the same problem.

Since that's the case, I've been very hard trying to figure out - and hoping - that the problem is something that I keep doing. I just don't know what it is.

Been using Nightstand app. Removed it now completely. That probably won't help either.

Had my previous iPhone5 changed to a new one exactly 10 days ago for this very reason, and here we go again - the same bug is here. Not funny.

I have been reading discussion boards a lot and it seems that this is a fairly common problem. However, nobody has come up with a solution.

If someone figures that out, he/she's gonna make a lot of customers happy.

If guesses count and FWIW…

When the phone is working normally, turn on a radio station or such; just something where the sound is always playing.

Then set the alarm. Perhaps you'll then be able to determine what happened immediately prior to the problem.

FWIW, I suspect the cause of the issue lies with some third party app that gets reinstalled with each of your new/replaced phones.

A simple test to determine if the problem is with a third party app is to simply delete them for a few days and then see if your problem persists. If the issue is resolved, you can add them back in 1 or 2 at a time until the culprit is found.

I know my counsel is a bit painful, but while others share in your distress, I find the odds astronomical that each of your phones also has this malady.

Thanks! Excellent points. Much appreciated.

The problem really could be one of the apps that gets re-installed every time I have plugged in a new iPhone and restored it from iTunes backup. Or maybe it's one of the settings.

If that's the case, just need to know now which one of the apps (or settings) is causing the problem. It gets a bit tricky because this sounds-off bug keeps popping up very infrequently and sometimes there are several weeks when it doesn't occur at all.
Maybe I should just remove as many apps as possible and go on adding them one by one like you suggested.

Yes, removing Nightstand is (IMHO) the best first step. After that has been removed for a few days and you're still having problems, then you'll need to begin deleting the other third party apps. If you remove half of them at a time you should have no more than a few iterations.

Please post back you success (or not).

Thanks guys!

Removed the Nightstand app and a bunch of other apps.

Will let you know how this works out. Might take a while since the problem did not occur every day in the first place.
