Funny thing about this. I'm waiting for my screen protector so I still have the factory front plastic on the LCD portion only and I don't get the rainbow effect.

There is a little piece of the LCD exposed because I didn't cut the plastic exact and I see the rainbow there.

Wonder if my screen protector will do this as well.

If only Ray Charles Or Stevie Wonder could read this, They would be laughing their a$$ off!!!!

Surprised today when I put on my polarized sunglasses, the iPhone 5 does not look very good at all.

Now I know all LCD screens are usually affected by polarized sunglasses but as you can see, the iPhone 4S looked fine (unless you tilted it in landscape mode).

The iPhone 5 actually has the same effect it seems, it looks normal but only in landscape mode.

I have polarized prescription sunglasses, and it's not nearly that bad. Looks the same as my 4 did.

According to the poster above, some phone had the polarization filter that interfered with polarized sunglasses in the portrait mode and some phones didn't have this issue.

Thanks for writing all that up by the way. It's was helpful to the discussion.

If it's a non issue for many of you, then that's fine. We all use our phones differently.

It personally affects me because the phone is my primary navigation device in the car. My iPhone 4 was fine in this respect. It's definitely helpful to be able to see a clear screen. And if there are iPhone 5s that allow this, then more power to me. Apple will take care of me like they always have. Nothing wrong with that.

i got some raybans too. new waferers polarized and thought it looked odd indoors but as soon as I went outside the distortion was gone. crystal clear :D

My experience:

iPad 2 - Looks fine with polarized oakleys
iPhone 4S - Distorted as usual for LCDs
iPhone 5 - Distorted as usual for LCDs

Same experience except I can't comment on the iPad 2. Oakley polarized lenses mess up the colors. Even make it hard to read my instrument cluster on my motorcycle unless I view it at the right angle.
iPad 3 is distorted in portrait. Fine in landscape.

Yea it looks like it may depends on the sunglasses themselves. I have a friend who tried it out and said his iPhone 5 looks normal with his polarized sunglasses.

Great, now I need a new iPhone compatible pair of sunglasses.

A new product line for Apple - iGlasses and iGoggles for skiing!

I have polarized Cartiers and I have been impressed with how it works with the 5. No issues when the phone is in portrait. But it does darken when I switch to landscape. Which makes sense since the lens is filtering one plane of light.

Maybe it varies form lens to lens and how they filter the light. But I am very happy as I could never use my sunglasses with my Galaxy Nexus before.

I've noticed differences in the polarization of iPhone screens. I had an iPhone 4 where I could only see it with polarized glasses in landscape mode, otherwise it would be black. Then I returned that due to a defective buzzer and the new phone could be seen at all orientations with polarized glasses. The LCD must have come out of a different manufacturing plant or something.

My iPhone 5 looks funky with polarized glasses unless I hold it at about 45 degrees tilt from portrait, then it looks fine.

I figure it's nearly impossible to get the perfect phone for polarized lenses to properly see but maybe some people will be lucky and get iPhone 5s that are polarized differently and be more viewable with glasses.

I just did a side-by-side (literally; one in each hand) comparison between my 5 and my GF's 3GS. I wore my Rudy Projects with the "Impact-X" polarized photochromic lenses.

The 3GS goes really dark when you turn it from portrait to landscape, and the 5 just goes through some funky colour tints.

Solution-to-a-problem-that-doesn't-really-exist: Remove polarized sunnies :D

Took the polarized sun glasses into the Apple store to look at the ones on display.

Some had a slight magenta cast. Some has a heavy. Some has a greenish one.

But there were many that had no cast. Sweet.

Got several issues. A clicking when pressing in the middle of the LCD screen. I think it's due to the battery pulling away from the case due to bad adhesive pad.

Got a two gap between the rear glass and metal. Very noticeable and was an obvious manufacturing defeat.

So I made a genius appointment.

Typical Apple, they took note of the problems. Confirmed and went to grab a new iPhone from their "secret" stash. I felt like I won the jackpot cuz the replacement iPhone they gave me didn't have the polarization filter in the angle that conflicted with the my polarize glass. So it now looks like my iPhone 4. Happy camper!

Mine does have the rainbow effect...I gotta wonder how many I'd have to go through to get one without it. It's a little annoying, but not *that* annoying. I *really* wonder what accounts for the variations.

ETA:

I went and looked at the phone outside. The different is really light, but it does look difference as I spin it, but it's not enough to worry about.

I have this issue with my 5. It's definitely an issue if you use the phone as a GPS while driving with sunglasses on. Or if you are using your phone outside like at the beach or pool.

It was messed up with me with cheaper $25 polarized sunglasses. I want to go to a store and try some more expensive glasses.
