Is it just me, or is the new iphone more expensive than the 4 was (I'm not sure how much the 4S was..). A 16gb ip4 was 649$ and a 32gb was 759$. Now, the ip5 16gb is 699$ and I guess the 32gb will be 799$.. That's a bit much (especially two years later, with decreasing prices for -most- materials)!

Also, the ip4 8gb is free when bought with a cell-provider contract, but sells for 450$ otherwise.. And when you add 450$ to the "sponsored" ip5 price, you would actually arrive (closer) to those previous prices.

I know things change, but I was hoping the in this case it would mean a lower (or equal) price, not a higher one.

Where did you see this?

Apple.ca

But I then went to the US store to compare, and I swore I saw it there, too. Although, I just went back there to check again, and it just said 199 w/ contract.
I don't know if I'm crazy and hallucinating, if Apple withdrew it, or if I simply never was on apple US and stayed on Apple Canada all along...

Still, the 3gs 8gb was sold for 375$ unlocked and now the 4 8gb is sold for 450$ unlocked. I know it's not the same phone, but I thought they would keep their entry phone at the same price.
The same for the "second cheapest" which was the ip4 for 549$ which is now the 4s for 599$ (albeit with more memory compared to the phone it replaces).

It's still starting at $649 here in America. Not sure why it's 50 bucks more in Canada.

Apologies to Apple - the 32gb is the same price as the 4S was (£599) 64gb is £699 - not sure if that is different.

Either way I'm skipping this gen, not cos I don't like the phone it's cos I haven't got the money for a unlocked phone - and i'm not going back under contract.
