iPhone 5 ques's

I have an Iphone 5 and have some questions:

1) what does turning the phone face-down on a desk do? Is this supposed to mute the phone?

2) when I block a telephone number on my iphone does it go directly to voicemail or blocks the call completely?

1. Nothing. You can place it face up or down and wont make a difference. It only mutes if you click the mute button.
2. It blocks the call. The caller might leave u a voice message but you won't get it at all. No texts or iMessages will come in either.
