For those that are curious, if the new iPhone really does have a taller display with a rumored resolution of 640 x 1136, this is how it breaks down in terms of everything else.

Aspect ratio: 1.78:1 (16:9)
Total display pixels: 727,040 (sub-HD)
PPI: 325 (Retina Class)

How does this compare with the iPhone 4S
Aspect ratio: 1.5:1 (3:2)
Total Display Pixels: 614,400
PPI: 326 (Retina)

In terms of how things look, with these specs, the new iPhone is more of a lateral move than a game changer despite the larger screen and higher resolution.

While I don't believe yet another thread on this subject is necessary, it is an interesting discussion. To see what becomes of future apps, should a taller iPhone be released. How they would compensate for the extra pixels.

Or would all apps simply run in letterbox?

I find the entire thing odd as Tim Cook just said part of the viability of iOS is it's continuity in screen size and resolution.

To shortly there after release a product which will overly complicated the development process seems a fairly bizarre decision.

But time will tell.

Although I like the 16:9 ratio, It does look horrible height-oriented.

Because they seem incapable of doing something about the top/bottom bezel. There are 4" screens with 16:9 that look fantastic.

I think this change is fairly mild, and will have little impact on apps or development.

I'm more interested in what display tech, and if Apple can surpass or match the beautiful HTC One X display without going HD.

1) Apple should go for 1280×720 with 16:9 aspect ratio at 4 Inches. PPI may go above 326.
Or
2) Keep the aspect ratio 4:3. Apps not modified for iPhone 5 can still run without letter boxing.

If Apple goes 6:9, the keynote will be very interesting. They'll have to give it away when they show iOS6, yes?

It's not 4:3 now. It's 1.5:1

Hey thanks guys. I have been looking for information with the specs for the new iphone. For some reason, Apply has not shared it with me yet.

FYI

4:3 is iPad

3:2 is iPhone

Im not very informed when it comes to screen rations and such, so i apologize if this is a stupid question, but could the new iPhone go to 4:3?? that would be idea because then all apps would be universal between iphone/ipad? Would that improve the screen resolution?
