the front glass is almost completely outside of the metal case apart from the lower right corner which is stuck like a stubborn mule, i'm dremelling out a case to put over the top and bottom to keep it in place, but what could be the cause of this? 3 sides of the phone are a damn light show, and it always pops back up immediately. i tried forcing it down with a neat little balloon case (inflate a balloon, press the phone against the side and slowly release air as the phone gets encased by the balloon) but that just seemed to... move the looseness, the top is almost back in the case now but the left side is open

What you should do instead of using force, is opening it up so you can see what the problem is. You'll need one of them pentalobe screwdrivers for this (a buck on ebay). Anyway, it could be the battery swelling up, which is potentially dangerous.

iPhone 5 screen and/or glass falling out

sounds spooky, i'll check it out
edit: in the meantime is there anything i can do to reduce the swelling?

When that happened to my son's, we took it to the Apple Store and they determined it was a bad battery...which was covered under an iPhone 5 replacement program. They exchanged it on the spot. And this was when the phone was over two years old. Check with Apple before you do anything.

funnily enough i dont have apple stores within a 7 hour drive if any at all, only retailers, what do i do with that?

I had the same problem with my 5S - it was my battery. You can call Apple and speak to them about it. I was under Apple Care but they offered to let me ship it in if a store was not nearby. Don't know if they do that if you are not covered but it doesn't hurt to try, I guess.

wait they just give you a new phone just like that? gosh dang diddly doo dongers •u• ill try that!!

In my case, yes they replaced the iPhone 5 on the spot with a refurbished one. And it was over two years old with no warranty.

It sucks but you should contact Apple about a replacement. This happened to me and it was a swollen battery.

I had taken it to work and went to take it out of a ziploc bag and our apple guy said not to even take it out of the bag. He'd seen it before.

You'll get a refurb phone to replace this.

Similar problem...

Hi all,

I'm having a similar problem as my 5s casing abruptly opened. But it's a little more complicated than that… My screen is half black as well and that half is unresponsive. I've opened the case, and everything is intact. Even disconnected the display ribbons and reconnected to no avail. I called Verizon AND Apple, and since I'm 16 days out of warranty, all they could suggest was to get a new phone. I'm kind of at wit's end. Can anybody help?

Make an appointment to go to a genius bar. Go in, explain the screen popped out, and they will most likely give you a new phone. Mine was out of warranty by 2 years and the battery forced the screen out.

had this same problem with my ip 5 luckily it was qualify for power button replacement. brought it in 3 weeks ago and they gave me a new ip 5 :D

Has anybody had there iPhone 5 replaced due to this recently? I realize this thread is old but my mother had this same deal happen to hers, she never dropped it and said the screen just randomly popped out one day. It's popped out from the top half near the ear speaker/FaceTime camera nothing is broken. It's out of warranty for maybe 2-3 years already. I hope it's the battery and we can get it replaced for free.
