Evening all,

Bit of a weird problem that, despite a myriad of google searches, I haven't been able to diagnose.

Effectively, my iPhone screen gets a weird crosshatch pattern on it when it's unlocked, and a slight ghosting effect.

I first noticed it on Friday night, after I'd used my iPhone as a SatNav for approximately 3 and a half hours. I do this pretty regularly, every couple of weeks or so, as I travel home at weekends. In the office earlier in the day, the touch screen did seem a tad unresponsive, but I just assumed there was a bit of dirt caught on the screen, so I just wiped it and carried on as normal. It was only when I'd completed the journey that I noticed I couldn't actually use the screen, it wouldn't accept any touch input, and had the aforementioned crosshatching on it.

I locked it, unlocked it, and the phone seemed to work fine, for about 30 seconds, until gradually the screen became unresponsive and the ghosting (of what appeared to be the SatNav (Waze)) and crosshatching appeared.

Miffed, I did all the usual, hard reset etc, and then eventually wiped it. Hurray! It worked and my beloved iPhone 5 was back. Until this evening. I headed back, same 3 and a half hour journey, SatNav worked fine. In fact, I'm fairly certain it was working perfect about ten minutes from the end, as I had to stop to get petrol, and I paused my audiobook, as I would normally, swiping up from the bottom of the screen. I didn't notice anything wrong the screen. It was only when I got inside and checked my phone, unlocked it, and the ghosting began. It was irritating.

So, basically, is this a known problem, is there a known fix, or am I just going to have to wipe and restore every time this happens. Or is this a wonderful excuse to buy myself a new phone?

Thanks very much for any help!

It conveys to me that your LCD display is inadequate and is lacking in functional properties. Substitute the malfunctioning component with a new display that is operative as intended from the manufactory.

Good luck!

I got the same problem. Cross-hatching slowly appearing and the screen becoming less responsive at the same time. Locking and unlocking it makes it go away for a brief period of time then it slowly creeps back. Although I know why – my LifeProof case leaked in some seawater about a month ago. I dried it in rice and silica for about a week but these symptoms are creeping in. I assume there is corrosion messing with the logic board or screen connectors.
