No, they always release it in the big markets first (US, UK, France & Germany). Others follow weeks after

Nope NZ had the iPhone 3G first and hopefully they'll have the iPhone 5 first as well.

Sunday makes sense. When launching on Fridays, Vodafone screws up the launch and it doesn't happen until Monday. By launching on a Sunday, Vodafone can only mess it up by one day!

Must be international. Vodafone Australia would do the same thing...
