Hey guys, my friend just picked up a Telus iPhone 5, the previous owner had it unlocked by asking telus. Thing is, if she ever restores the phone or update to new version of iOS-will it lose the unlock and go back to being locked again ?

Or is it unlocked and is now just like a factory unlocked iPhone ?
Thanks !

Once it's officially unlocked by the carrier it's forever unlocked no matter how many times you restore or update the firmware.

Thanks. One more thing-after restoring in iTunes, it gave a message "congratulations, your iPhone is now unlocked". It means it is indeed officially unlocked right ?

I just bought an AT&T at full price and I want to unlock it. Should I take the sim out before restoring it and unlock thru iTunes? Does it matter?

This the iTunes procedure I use with a different SIM to sync the AT&T unlock:

  • Connect iPhone to iTunes with not accepted (not valid) SIM card

  • Wait until iTunes detects the phone. Now disconnect iPhone and reconnect after 10 seconds. iPhone is Unlocked.

Sometimes the Congratulations message will show up, sometimes not. But if you got signal, you are all set.
