Do you have your contacts on iCloud? If so, then no, you won't lose your contacts or anything else you have on iCloud.
It is best to restore to new because if you restore from a backup then you are just loading the same possible corrupted data right back on your phone. A fresh install is just that. A brand new install that gets everything right back where is should be. you will however, have to install all your apps again but that's a good thing really. Even some developers recommend deleteing and re-installing their app if you are having trouble with it. What you will lose is any saved games data and texts and voicemails. Stuff like that.
I do use icloud for contacts. I have been using the same restore since the 3g and jailbroke all my devices and show about 1.17 g of other.

I think all versions of the iPhone have this issue but can't prove it. AT&T are horrible of breaking down data usage Verizon app and online seems to be more precise on data usage. Try turning cell data off in settings when on wifi. Only way to be 100% not using data while on wifi

i had this same issue earlier with my iPhone 4 on ios 5. consumed massive amount of data in one day when i thought i was on wi-fi the whole time. AT&T was of no help in figuring it out but they were helpful in giving me a credit.
the event coincided with streaming a large video in a location where the wifi is slow. only time that has ever happened. now if i am going to stream anything i turn cell data off and go wi-fi only.

If you've been using the same backup since your 3G dare I say you could possibly have at least some corrupted data. If your phone is working fine then just continue. But if you are having any sort of battery issues or anything else, I would suspect that very old backup. It's up to you. Now with iCloud it makes the restore to new process much easier but it's still time consuming to get everything back as it was.
All I'm saying is that to me, it's well worth it!
YMMV

Add me to the list. Verizon iPhone 5. Use WiFi most of the time, and my data usage appears surprisingly high.

Ran a test: Connected to WiFi, reset data usage statistics, did a speedtest, ran a very short youtube video, and Cellular Network data went from 0 to 66KB sent, 801KB received.

Checked wifi router speed from my laptop, and there are no connection or speed issues (10Mbps down, 1Mbps up, 67ms ping), so there should be no good reason for LTE to kick in.

Sounds like I'll be making a visit to the genius bar in Orlando.

Edit: Disabled iCloud backup, although it was only set to backup on WiFi. I do keep my contacts on iCloud, so that and some other stuff is turned on. Documents and Photostream are only set to sync when on WiFi.

When cellular data is enabled and your on wifi, your phone is going to phone home on cellular data once in a while wether you like it or not, just shut down cellular data.

thanks for the input

I am having the same problem and we don't have LTE here in the UK!!!

My data usage has skyrocketed with my iPhone 5 and iOS 6 and there is no way that I should be burning the kind of data amounts that O2 is claiming.

I'm having this same issue with my iPhone 5 on Verizon. I didn't have this issue on my iPhone 4 on any of the iOS 6 betas or the GM.

Typically I used about 600-900MB a month on my 4. I'm at 400MB right now with the 5 after a week of very very light use compared to how I used the 4 (barely used the 5 because it was defective and just got it swapped last night).

I don't use iCloud backup. Just syncing some of some apps.

I hope this gets addressed with a iOS update ASAP. I'll be going over my cap for sure if I leave LTE on.

You have to admit that is a pretty untenable solution. Sure, 'any port in a storm' for the short term. But I sure hope to be seeing a more elegant solution for AT&T users.

I noticed that when my iP5 comes out of sleep I see the LTE or 4G for a split second then it changes to the wifi icon. This means while it's in sleep mode it's in Cellular not wifi. So everything it does in sleep mode via internet will suck up Cellular data.

Every iphone I've had has done this.

Verizon just released a carrier update that patches this. For VZW customers, Go to Settings -> General -> About and it will pop up in like 3 seconds. It should say Verizon 13.1 instead of 13.0

You mean while sleeping? My iphone has ALWAYS done that (since the 3).

I've been an iphone user for YEARS. My iphone has always displayed 3G until I woke it up.

Bingo...my wifes iphone 4 on ios 5 does this as well

Didn't have a chance to post about this happening with my AT&T iPhone 5 but it had downloaded 5+ GB of data in less than a 24 hr period, the first day I had activated it.

My iTunes music cloud downloads that were done at night while I was at my parents home via a mobile hot spot had someone d/l'd largely over wifi.

By the next morning, I received a warning text from AT&T stating my unlimited plan hit the 5gb omit & I was being throttled.

After doing some investigating, my iPhone 5 was doing the same ing I read about earlier in this thread & also on Apple's support forums. The wifi logo was disappearing when waking from sleep/lock. Further, my hotspot beeps when a device connects/disconnects. So I was literally hearing the problem happen.

Long story short, I took it to the Genius Bar today, they found that my springboard had crashed numerous times and gave me a replacement phone. So far, the issue has yet to arise with this phone.

Yes and what do we have here today linked below?! My theory pretty much solidified. I wonder if bloggers brought enough attention to this and the earpods problem while on calls (sounds like the person you're speaking to is going in and out) if we would get more letters of apologies from Tim cook?! I can care less about maps

I just checked my data for the first time on my phone. 1.2 GB received . I'm chalking this up to downloading a bunch of apps over LTE as I don't have wifi in my dorm. At least I still have unlimited data.
