I don't know why people seem to think IT people have this much time to spy on them.
Honestly from an IT perspective I'm sure no one cares what your phone has on it or does Unless it can compromise the company, but even then it's not like places are going to just look or things for no reason.
Remote wipe capability is very common though for security if lost or terminated but anything more is highly unlikely

I have corporations iPhone 4 from my work. IT guy said that the only phone part on this iphone they care about. I had to enter all contacts manually. He said I can do any thing i want with itunes part. Each email contact I entered it automatically updated every thing, including land line numbers and addresses. I been forced to set up my pass code lock before phone been handled to me. They wanted me use this phone as the only phone because I didn't want to carry two phones. I did not see any additional software on this phone beside stock apple. One thing though, I still afraid to install Facebook or Instagram on it for my privacy. I wonder if my fear is baseless. I don't worry if they can remotely wipe it, as long as they will not get access to my things.

I can say for certain that if my employer required that I provide my own mobile phone for work purposes, that phone would be a Virgin Mobile and I would ONLY use it for work. I'd write it off as a business expense (unreimbursed) and I would do my personal things on my own personal phone. Mixing them in this day of corporate and government spying on people is just not something I am willing to do. However, I refuse to work for a company that expects me to bring my own communication device and wireless plan in order to conduct THEIR business.

Would you carry 2 phones around if you have to be on call 24/7

Any good IT dept will require you to install something like an Enterprise mobile manager software on the phone which will allow them to locate the device if lost or remotely wipe it as, that's required by most audit regulations for any mobile device that retains information.

I don't think it's spying on their employees is common practice, so I would have to say that it's more just for security and audit requirements.

Agreed, I work with the Mobile phones at my company and we only allow iPhones or BB devices, however there are third party apps for Android like TouchDown email client, and on the iPhone we have Blackberry BES10 which were written to allow us to remote wipe your entire phone, or just email.

It is not a common practice and is illegal to track or trace an employee's daily functions on a device they do not own, unless there is a court order for security reasons, however that being said, most of the software is used to protect the company's email from reaching the wrong hands.

Sorry to revive this. But isn't adding an exchange server tobyour iPhone just like adding any other email address?

I went into Boxer and just tried and it didn't ask for any security specific items etc like it does on android.

Exchange accounts are normally corporate controlled IMAP service with extra benefits such as a global address list, CRM attached contact lists, and a few other features that can be added. Normally a base level of security is allowed for exchange accounts to allow the admin to erase and reset the lost phone should you lose your device or have it stolen. The information is more valuable than the device normally. If you install an extra layer of protection, you can also have access to apps, texts, etc... Even require a password to unlock the phone.

It's not. Even though no messaging or options are presented Exchange does have at the very least some control (depending on the policy that is set up), like at least being able to erase the contents of the phone (as mentioned in a reply above).

So loading an exchange mail acct is a Backdoor in to view even the personal accounts loaded in your mail.app or whatever email client you have?

Not sure about a backdoor, or being able to see other accounts, but it provides the ability for the Exchange server you connect to to have some control over the phone, generally as far as being able to erase the phone, but also to be able to restrict some options or settings like requiring passcode and perhaps only with certain smaller lengths of time, perhaps even restricting some functions like camera or something else (fairly rare), and other similar things of that nature, which can potentially include access to some data/apps too (again, fairly rare).

Exchange doesn't have a backdoor to the entire system, it only has control over the exchange account information and the remote wipe for iOS devices. You need a separate solution to be able to view more on iOS and control different apps and services.
