I think that this is a faulty assumption. If there's one mistake that most people make on these forums, it's judging not-yet-released Apple products by last years parts and tech. Apple almost always comes out with new proprietary parts and configurations inside their devices to make them faster and smaller.

The best/most recent example of this is the battery from the iPad 2 and the new iPad. Almost identical form factor and battery life, yet the iPad 2 has a 25 watt-hour battery while the new iPad has a 42.5 watt-hour battery.

I can definitely see the same thing being done with the new iPhone; we'll see!

The new ipad is noticably thicker and quite a bit heavier than the ipad2 to accomodate the larger battery

What I was recently thinking, was that with the iPhone 4/4S the screen and the back were raised a bit above the antenna band. With the new unibody backcover that has leaked, the back is completely flush with the sides. The black frontpanel that will surround the screen seems to be exactly the same width as the iPhone 4/4S's front panel. What if the screen and frontpanel will also be flush with the unibody? This would mean that the frontpanel would have to be inside the unibody, so the unibody has to be a bit wider than the frontpanel, making it look wider than the iPhone 4/4S. That could clarify the photos that make the unibody look wider than the iPhone 4/4S's frontpanel. In total it will probably not be wider, because the antenna band on the iPhone 4/4S is also wider than the frontpanel, but because it is positioned lower, it seems too look smaller on these comparison shots.

"Noticably thicker" = .6 mm  (less than 5 sheets of copier paper thick)
"Quite a bit heavier" = 50 grams  (less than the weight of 10 nickels)

Not exactly a porker comparatively.

I still own both. While the numbers don't quantify to much, if you hold one of them after using the other for a while, there is a noticable difference. The ipad 2 is extraordinarily light and thin. It feels way better to me. However, as soon as I look at the ipad2's blurry text, I understand why the compromise is needed.

50 grams is nothing to sneeze at, especially when added to something so light. It's the same weight as a shaft from a golf club.

That's fine, but I seize on the "almost always" portion of your rebuttal. Apple clearly did not make the 4S better than the 4 by enough of a margin to justify the abysmal battery life users see when more than one or two services are active.

We'll see what happens... For the record, I hope I am wrong. I just don't think this thing is going to set the world on its ear when people can't use Siri, Maps, LTE, and Bluetooth together and have it last for more than 4 hours.

Man if your iPhone is only lasting 4 hours how come you've not sought help from a genius.

I submit everybody's battery life is varying due to usage patterns. I use my 4s moderately heavy and achieve 1 to 1.5 days before requiring a re charge.

As for theories in what the next new iPhone is going to be aesthetically and what's going to be under its good isn't it why we are all partly here on apple dedicated user to user forums to theorise and enjoy the rumours whilst we await in anticipation. Keep an open mind and enjoy the ride is my philosophy ! Happy days.

That's fair enough, but the general point of my argument remains. Apple generally finds a way to make iDevices both slimmer in form factor and either increases or maintains specs. Although these days, we have seen some sacrifices, as you alluded to.

Read more carefully. At the risk of defending my detractor, he was hypothesizing about the new iPhone and hoping that it gets better than 4 hours b/c much of its rumored tech traditionally being quite power hungry.

What I'd like to ask / discuss is the upcoming iPhone's width.

So, what is the deal?

The deal is Apple is too narrow minded to embrace what is proven to be the popular spacious sized display used on two of the most popular smartphones in the world.

Instead the once innovative Cupertino Co. that railed against "the man" has now become "the man" and dictates to us mere mortals.

Obsessed with "thin" & "narrow" they're operating with tunnel vision in a world with a wide field of view :D

But Apple does as Apple wants.

That's what you can get away with in a closed cult like environment, ever so successfully cultivated by their God, Steve Jobs :D

So what if Apple doesn't think a large display is what makes for the best phone. I know that sometimes you just love playing the devil's advocate and pushing people's buttons, but if you don't like it, why worry about it? Apple is free to do as they please, and if they're really make such agregious mistakes, as you so frequently say they are, then they will reap what they're sowing.

You rant and rail like Moses exclaiming, "Let my people go," but he thing is, people are fine where they are; there is no need more a liberator.

honestly, you're talking as if you had a very good insight as to Apple's prototype stages and see that they had no plans to merely prototype a wider screen. Despite earlier rumors of a debunked teardrop shaped iPhone prototype with a wider screen. Then you try and insult people who actually like Apple products by falsely acclaiming that they worship a CEO that dies like any normal human being. Are you trying to say that something people like that you don't agree with, means that they worship the deceased CEO of that company?
Realise that not everyone thinks like you. You've got some serious issues with your attitude. And I've seen comments like this spread throughout the forum from you.

LEave him alone to his thing. I'm sure you've noticed his arrogant filth scattered throughout this forum.

Nah. I appreciate a good back-and-forth; keeps us all on our toes. I think "arrogant filth" is a bit much; I'd call it playing the devil's advocate. Can he be a hard-nosed jerk sometimes? Sure, but that's part of a forum.

The thing I hate is the way he can sometimes be ants in a picnic, and act as if all apple fans are some sort of mouth-bubbling steve worshippers and that he's some sort of leader of the pack.

Feel better now ?

Oh my we have such sensitive individuals here, they must personalize it and throw insults and judgmental comments to pump up their egos. It's very revealing.

Conversely, my posts simply state experiences & opinions about the product. That's what free speech and a forum is about. At no time do I stoop so low as to personalize a post just for the sake of hurling insults at specific people.

I don't know about ixodes, but what frustrates me is that the iPhone, while arguably the best overall phone in the world, is held back by Apple's stead-fast refusal to make it even better by modernizing the OS and giving the phone a decent sized screen.

It's not that I dislike the iPhone, it's that it could be so much more, but Apple continues to play it safe with it's 'one size will fit all' approach and half-hearted OS updates.

If I keep the brightness down, WiFi, Bluetooth, and location services off, and am near a site so that the phone doesn't have to increase power to find a link, then I can go all day with a moderate to heavy load of talking.

So, my iPhone 4 - which is supposed to be a multimedia, web enabled, nirvana inducing machine - works really well as a cell phone when I sacrifice all the things I bought it for. And every person I know with a 4S has it even worse...

Which led to me starting this thread. if the battery truly only is 3% better, then that new logic board better be one gold plated, blue chip, anti-gravity, cold fusion wonder of RF engineering or the "5" will be worse on life yet.

But hey, lets look at the bright side... if you never have LTE enabled, then your data bucket will last longer! :)
