First off, the color options for the 5c are just awful!

I just love how they call it a new model when it's an iPhone 5 in a case that the significantly cheaper to manufacture. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the iPhone 6 followed in a similar trend of this too. Jobs was someone who cared more about all aesthetics of a device even at the expense of cost and efficiency. Cook is all about the bottom line, and if it keeps up Apple will turn into another Microsoft.

I truly hope they can turn it around, but I've yet to see any indication of this since Jobs passed from the current management. :(

On one hand, Apple could've done extremely well on making sure they manufactured a lot of these phones. Remember, there have been many, many leaks which implies there were a lot of them being produced. On the other hand, they might not be popular with consumers. Who knows?
I think it could be a bit of both. Definitely high volumes because as you've said, there has been a lot of leaks. But I do think there won't be as much demand as there is for new iPhones usually, just because there's two new iPhone and not just one.
+1.. no demands for the 5C... what a waste of R&D.
Generally..... most people want the latest and the greatest!
What gives you the idea that there's no demand for the 5c?

I feel sorry for everyone who pays this outrageous off contract price for the 5C or gets it via contract subsidisation
(even then it would make more sense to get the 5S or a different phone)

I've said this so many times today, but it is just a matter of opinion.

They have five colours and 2 memory sizes. That's 10 models to get ready plus It's old components which were already in mass production. add to that the case is very easy to produce compared to the 5 then they will have vastly more supplies of these than any other iPhone at launch.

This won't be a flop, in fact i reckon it'll be a huge hit in the 16-25 age. parents giving their kids iPhones that are less likely to be damaged

The 5C is the beginning of a new cycle.

They come out with a new flagship unibody aluminum or new material phone and last years phones guts go into a plastic cheaper model. They don't want to make the 5 and 5S at the same time.

It also gives you the feeling of getting something newish.

With that, I don't expect a high number of initial orders for the 5c, but I expect over time it will be a big seller with new customers. This is a phone for the long haul, not a phone people will stand days in line for.

I don't think it was a waste. They now have a process that allows them, in the future, to place the existing internals in a cheaper-to-produce shell.

This price point may have failed but I see this being the future of all free on contract devices after Fall 2014

Remember the 5C as the greatest flop from Apple in the recent years.
...
...
(yes, even considering Siri and Maps)

What is a flop? Only 2-3 million units sold in the first weekend instead of 5 million? A "flop" for Apple seems like a huge success that other companies could only dream of.

I dont know about you all. I will instantly pre-order the next macbook air in polycarbonate unapologetic plastic, its the future - only cause jony said so.

It would make perfect sense to separate the air from the pro line, if only Tim was running the show instead of Jobs earlier on.

It'll definitely be fun to see numbers on 5c sales vs. 5s sales, considering Apple provides them to us.

I'll make a bet right now we never get that and we only get sales figures the week after the 20th.

that's cause everyone is waiting for the 5s

Definitely.

Why they didn't make preorders for the 5s is still puzzling me. The 5c is the 5 in a new shell. When the 5 came on last year, they didn't do preorders for the 4s...why now, for a colorful shell?

Apple is pushing sales of the 5C. Holding the preorders for the 5S is basically a way to funnel more people into preordering the 5C, since it's the only "next big thing" they can preorder right now.

I got a very unexpected email from my mother this morning asking when I could order her the 5c in Pink. Told her the benefits of the 5s and I hope she goes with that instead, but I couldn't knock the 5c. I love my 5 and the color choices plus cases are really cool. Plus honestly $550 off the shelf for some reason does not sound nearly as bad as $650.

The "c" stands for candy, because kids and girls are going to eat these color/color combos like candy on halloween.

The 5c will sell like crazy for Christmas and it'll be the phone people walking into an Apple store or carrier retail location will be interested in buying.

Thing will be hot with kids and, especially, women who like their phone to be a bit of a fashion accessory.

Pre-orders? This phone's target demographic was sleeping when it went on sale.

There is very minimal R&D, this IS just a iPhone 5 with a bit larger battery and a new colored case. It's the same as every year, last year's phone becomes the mid-level option it's just they got smart and splashed some color on it to make it feel "new."

People who rush to preorder unreleased phones don't order last years model. These phones appeal to the folks who casually wander into a apple store or phone shop and say "how cute is that, ok, I'll get one."

PS: the lack of preorders for the 5S isn't to artificially generate long lines, it's because they are constrained on supply due to low yield on the fingerprint sensor.

I think this also has to do with the kind of customers who would stay up late to preorder. Usually preorders for the next phone always go fast because it's the same kind of diehards that want the phone as soon as possible. The 5c market seems a lot less concerned with that. I doubt pre-orders will be out of stock even today.

I'd be interested to see the breakdown of sales in terms of colour and capacity.

I'm thinking perhaps the presale is so Apple can gauge which colors are most popular and which ones to have more stock of in stores.

Lack of shortages is a GOOD thing for the 5c, not a bad thing. That's obviously one of the primary reasons that Apple chose to go with a plastic case for iPhone 5's move to the second tier.

What a flop.

The Hong Kong sales are just scalpers I bet who will sell them to countries not on the release schedule

I doubt it - why would people want to pay the higher prices that scalpers charge when no one wants to pay the price Apple is asking for? There's no particularly good country not included in the launch for a scalper to head to, anyways.

You are probably the 10% of Apple iPhone users that require it.

My parents for example, rather save $ and have the 5C. As do parents who buy their kids iPhones.

I have a feeling the 5C won't sell out (plenty of manufacturing to meet the demand), but it'll sell more than the 5S.

I just hope Apple doesn't kill off the 'Pro' version of the iPhone next year.
