But you'll also have essentially traded in one phone in exchange for the same phone, and pushed yourself two years back on your contract cycle, which is where the true cost of the phone is hidden. You'll then need to either wait two years for full discount, contract pricing or be stuck with 3 year old tech until your next upgrade.

I'm actually able to upgrade my phone every year. I have 3 lines on my plan, and AT&T is gracious enough to let me have an upgrade every year instead of every 2 years.

They love it!

Wife and my two girls REALLY want the 5c. We watched the Keynote and one of them almost cried of excitement. The colors really pop out and the case really makes it very expressive. Truly C is indeed for the colorful.

Looks like a toy.

Isn't it? Isn't that what what all so-called phones are these days?

There are so many things wrong with what you just said I'm not sure where to start.

The case holes faux-pas was deliberate.

The 5C was affectionately known by its "creators" as 'Hon' (Honey) and they very cleverly lined up the holes for it to read such. It's no accident.

So lets not hear any more naysaying.

Garish is good!

Ha this is funny.

Those who are freaking out over the colors and the "cheap plastic" are apparently oblivious to the history of iMacs, iPods, and iBooks.

If Steve is "rolling in his grave" today over the iPhone 5c then please explain why - because Apple was producing plastic laptops and iMacs PRIOR TO the newer aluminum models. (Short memory??)

Not to mention that the colors of the earlier iMacs and iBooks were quite radical and flashy for computers at that time. Oh yeah, Macs are just toys and aren't to be taken seriously.... so everyone was saying.

Maybe some people had better freshen up on Apple's history of products BEYOND the past 5 or so years. They'd learn a lot about how Apple offered devices with a colorful style AND at different price points. Apple is not cheapening their brand by offering a cheaper phone. If that were true then please explain the entry level iPods, the previous entry level plastic MacBook, the Mac mini, etc. Apple's approach by offering different models is not a change from how they've handled many products in the past.

people are freaking out because they feel it 'cheapens' the elitist image the iPhone has always had. they're concerned they won't be seen as so special with their iPhone now that there's a polycarbonate/color choice for the filthy, unwashed masses.

myself, i love the new C phones. they look great, playful and fun. sad they don't have orange, but i plan to pick up either the green or yellow one. they look terrific with the black screen (so glad apple didn't go white, ugh).

all the haters will be sadly put in their place when the C sells like hotcakes.

5s has better camera and the Nike+ software with the M7

Short version: Color/plastic is really not that big a deal and the $100 difference from the 5c to 5s is significant.

Long version:

In all seriousness, does the plastic shell make any true difference to the majority of people (not the majority of people on this site, but the majority of people that are not reading a tech-centric chat board)? I did a couple of quick searches, nothing scientific. I found several reports that estimate that ~75% of smartphone users have their phones in cases. My again unscientific eyeball test tells me that as well.

Once an phone is in a case, the color and material of the backing is or can be virtually irrelevant. Yes, I understand that some cases have holes to show through the underlying color and even the printing and find that those holes, more precisely the lower few rows of holes, make absolutely no sense. But there is a humongous industry in aftermarket accessories that has been fueled by phones/tablets. And with the new colored backs, you'll see many more creative cases that exploit the coloring, along with cases that cover the entire phone back that hide the color. Ultimately, the color can be as exploited or negated depending on preference.

I have a black iPhone 5. It has been in a case since the day it was purchased. The back could be purple plastic, and I would not know the difference. I actually think that the black face is what should be the bigger put-off to people as many prefer the white face, and once in a case that's what mostly remains visible anyhow.

Onto the pricing. I see many posts indicating that the 5c makes no sense, spend the extra $100 and get the 5s. That is very very likely what I would do (again, coming from someone on a tech-centric chat board). I would want the flagship product.

But step back, don't think about a singular phone for a single individual. Think about the incredible cost of phones and plans, a cost that simply didn't exist in the past for families. Based on my age and position in life, I have many many family members, friends, and neighbors with 2 and 3 teenage kids. When shopping/upgrading phones/plans for a family of 5 with 3 kids, wow it can add up, to the tune of several hundred dollars for the phones and $300ish a month for the plan. 5-10 years ago, that same family was spending $70/mo on their basic plan, and getting new phones for $0. Now, we're looking at monthly costs that rival a car payment. A $100 difference in phones is not insignificant and will drive sales.

So why did Apple not just make the iPhone 5c a freebie? Value perception. I am in sales, selling enterprise-level contracts to large corporations that can exceed $500,000 in total contract value. The worst thing I can ever do is provide something for free. It completely undermines the value of my product and service, and the client or prospect never will look at me the same.

It does not matter what you say, Steve would not have allowed it anyways and Apple will still be dead within 6 months.

Where did I say Steve "would have allowed it"? And how exactly do you know what he would and wouldn't have allowed? Were you in his head? Even he didn't know what he would or would allow.. many of Apple's products Steve immediately rejected before being eventually convinced.

Don't try to speak for someone you never knew, and know nothing about.

Apple will be dead in six months? Really. A company with a $400B market cap and $150B in cash will be dead in six months.

*Sighs*

Fools have been tolling the bells of doom for Apple long before you owned its products, and I suppose will continue to do so long afterwards.

Don't be ridiculous.

By the way, it always matters what I say.

I think the 5C will sell like hot cakes. But even if it doesn't, I feel like it's a win-win for Apple. If the 5c sells well, they improve margins due to lower materials and manufacturing costs vs the 5. If people find the 5s to be a better value, Apple improves their top line and bottom line.

And with the addition of NTT DoCoMo and China Mobile, Apple will gain access to almost a billion subscribers so they'll continue their methodical growth.

Someone posted a link yesterday to the thread about the first iPod Keynote. It was complaint after complaint, and a lot about it's pricing. Not to mention a lot of "Another MP3 player? How about some innovation like the old days Apple!?!"

I guess the more things change the more they stay the same.

It's a fine replacement for the "last year's phone at cheap price" and it will probably sell about as well as the 4S phone is selling now. It's just not a "new model" that everyone was hoping for and expecting, and it's not going to grow Apple's market share.

OMG. It is obvious that this never would be allowed, I don't get how Cook can allow this, it's rediculous....

Money on the bank does not help when you slowly vanish off the market... The only outcome I can see is that in 6months Samsung will DOMINATE the phone sales....

And NO, It does not matter what you say when Steve wouldn't approve.

Except that Apple's market share in China is actually FALLING at an alarming rate!! I believe it was down something like 40% this year and honestly, that trend will continue. I live in Hong Kong and it used to be that everyone here was crazy for the iPhone but now, everyone has the Samsung Galaxy or Note. Samsung has always had a very strong brand reputation in Asia Pacific and now they are releasing high quality smartphones, people are switching to them in their droves. People here want big screens, innovation and value for money and Apple isn't delivering this. The low cost iPhone or a new iPhone with better tech and a bigger screen could have helped Apple reverse this trend but now, they are 2 years behind in the largest potential market in the world.

I also need to add that in Chinese culture, the concept of face and giving respect is critical to the success of any relationship and Apple's launch event in Beijing shows how little they understand this. People in China expected senior Apple reps to appear in person to present the products but instead all they got was a video of the event that took place in the US earlier, which they already knew about. The media comments here noted that with this move, "Apple has indeed done something remarkable - they have managed to piss off every media outlet in China," (source - South China Morning Post). Not a smart move.........

I'm not so sure this is one you're going to need to pre-order. You could probably just show up to the store.

Why would anyone want to buy an iPhone at a store? Everything about that process and experience is miserable at best.

----------

This thing is overpriced by about $100 per device. I seriously have no idea who would buy this...

No it isn't. By what bizarre logic?

Its an iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 cost 650 yesterday, and by all logical trend was set to drop to 550. And it did.

Get a clue troll.

Oh yeah you know what you're talking about. You don't a thing about "big screen" sales figures, which are miserable, nor do you know anything about Mainland China sales. Nor do you have any vision when it comes to the importance of China Mobile. Nor do you have the slightest clue about the profits Apple is raking in.

All is well, except in your deluded brain.

You must not keep track of Apple stock closely enough... Apple's stock has historically dropped after every announcement. It has become common enough that people short the stock during the announcement and make money as it gradually goes up again.

Yes but you must have not kept track of analyst's projections that the 5c/5s announcement and opening up of a huge market segment in China was supposed to make the stock skyrocket to previous record levels.

So the fact that this is 'on par' with other announcements was unexpected and yes, a disappointment on Wall Street.

As a new parent, I am curious - what is the proper parental reaction to a child almost crying in excitement over an inanimate shiny object?

Maybe he meant something entirely different...let me translate:

"The iPhone 5C isn't that special. Therefore, it won't be in high demand. And thus, preorder isn't a big deal."

Which is about wrong and about as -inserted no longer politically correct term- as anything else I've read.

Joy, at what used to be a simple and worry-free life.

>>"Maybe you live nowhere near an Apple store, nor a company owned cellular store?"
>>"Maybe you have to work (yes, I know people that work 12 hour shifts routinely)?"

Or like me, maybe you're overseas in Afghanistan, Iraq or some other remote country?

LOL omg the Samsung shills got paid A LOT this round didn't they?

What are you talking about?

Do you seriously think the greatest Genius of all time would allow this? Yes I'm talking about Steve.

TREAT HIM WITH RESPECT

Head your own words you pathetic paid shill.

Steve was as bad for Apple as he was good. He made some brilliant things happen, and prevented other equally brilliant things from happening.

I don't approve nor care to entertain any discussion whatsoever about what he would or would not do, as no one knows, and anyone who comments as if they know, has severe personal and psychological issues.
