Got lucky and found a 64 GB space gray in So. Cal on Saturday, and the GF drops it on the granite floor. Big gash and dent on one corner. Thankfully the rep added Mobile Premium insurance at upgrade without asking me. Genius or dumb, I got lucky!

As I filled out the claim online and when Asurion's website came to the part to verify the device, on the next screen it informed me that the device is backordered naturally and I can do get in line. I did back order the device on Asurion's website.

Does anyone know if the device they send me will be a new phone or "replacement" unit etc...

Any info would be helpful.

Can we see pics?
Pics or it didn't happen ;)

Bring it to Apple, you might get a free replacement, they seem to like giving those right at product release for QC reasons.

I can't say which stock they'll use, but there are only new phones. The "replacement" phones you're referring to are new iPhones without the retail packaging.

There won't be refurbished phones around for quite a while.

Humm... I might just try and see if that might work. Its dented, but no scratches or dents anywhere else.

You will get a B-Grade iPhone. All of the parts that don't pass QC that aren't good enough for retail go into these replacement phones. The battery life is horrible on replacements from Asurion.

until a bunch of people start returning their space gray phones for another color lol

Do you still have to pay like $199 for the replacement?

Also, can I keep the broken one? lol :)

Went to the Apple store, and they first asked if I got it from the ATT store (which I did). They were about to ask me to return it to them, but then I said ATT does not have stock.

Manager made an exception to have it replaced as defective from factory. They opened the replacement from a new sealed box in front of me. :D

No need to do an insurance claim. Yay!

Attached is the pic of the dent.

They send a new retail box iphone. I did a claim for my AT&T4S back when it came out and they sent a sealed retail box.

Get a case or dump the GF.

So OP lied to apple store and said it was dented out of the box. Thanks for constraining an already tight supply.

It may or may not be true, but it wasn't explicitly stated in his post.

Edit: And it also wasn't stated but the sealed box may have been a white box replacement which would have not affected retail.

Again, assumptions on my part.

Really

You are worried about that. I could only imagine if you ever bought a new car and then a week into it recieved a little ding while driving. If the phone works keep it and if it was that big of a deal you would have bought a case ASAP.

I broke my verizon 16gb iPhone 5s (gold) three days ago. The phone fell out of my pocket and the screen totally shattered (with a case on). I immediately felt stupid for getting insurance with Verizon instead of applecare+. I didn't want a refurbished phone. Got home and did a claim through Asurion. Got a response in about three hours, basically saying that my phone was out of stock and they would notify me when they got some in stock. I called the next day and was offered a "comparable" phone which turned out :eek:to be a 16gb iPhone 5s in silver. The customer service rep couldn't guarantee that the phone would be new or refurbished. I bit the bullet and paid the deductible. Today, I receive what I assume is a brand new phone. It was in apple packaging, with shrink wrap and accessories. This was a very pleasant surprise.

The deductible was $169. I know I could've had it repaired for cheaper. But I had a bad experience with a previous screen repair on my iphone 4

Ah ok. Yeah, glad you had a good experience but apple care definitely seems a superior option if you want insurance.

You wanted a replacement for that tiny dent
