and Apple needs a netbook.

screen resolution will be like when the processor race have reach the gigahertz speed. intel and amd focus on cores... screen resolution for below 5" device would hit a plateau on 1080p res, after that just improve on viewing angle and power consumption. no need for a 4K res on 5 inch display, no one would see the difference.

never say never...

"We present to you the iPhone 5S with all new Retina S enhanced viewing double pixelated screen. A feature so simple you didn't know you needed until you saw it. It makes blacks look even blacker and whites look almost black."

May we all stop complaining and actually wait patiently until the next iPhone comes out. Gosh......

:D:apple:

Nice !

However, for more pixels the bezel has to be thinner correct ?

therefore, we should see a point if Apple keeps doubling this few years (and making developers re-wire older apps to work with), then we should soon see a phone that is 2560x phone at one point with no bezel, and no Home button..

All buttons would be on the side. And Home button would be now a swipe effect instead.

at one point it has to be vertical increase too, otherwise it would be an odd resolution difference be greater over time, and the only way to do this would be to eliminate/or redesign the Home button, since i don't think you can cram infinite no. of pixels into the same area. you must increase the phone at some point (even if its a small difference)

I don't think I'm alone when I say that I'd rather have a larger display(doesn't have to be a phablet), than a higher PPI display in the same package.

Count me in! All this talk of a new Retina display and stupid and does not help Mac Users looking for a large iPhone.

Just makes no sense that they are making smaller iPads, but NOT larger iPhones.

I actually picked up a Samsung Galaxy the other day and these 62 year old eyes and fingers starting thinking hmmmm...

Come on Apple get rid of the retina hype and give us a larger iPhone.

Samsung is way better. I have seen countless iphones with broken screens, but my Sammy is toughest phone I owned! Iphone offers mediocre functions at exorbitant price. Samsung is the way to go.

how can you all say it doesn't make sense? all the competition has far higher dpi in there screens than the iPhone. Does apple really want to be left behind???

Because there would not be any practical benefit, but it would have a negative impact on performance.

If your going to push higher resolution, then make the screen size bigger. Even Blackberry's z10 is 4.2" in screen size. 4.5-5" with Full HD resolution is the norm for a 2013 phone. 4 inches with higher resolution is a waist of time, money and will not fit well with. Redesigned OS. Redesigned OS calls for a complete new Phone.

My only question is - why?

Are people really going to see that kind of difference? On a 4" phone?

Two reasons. First, it likely will look even better closer up, and competitors are offering higher pixels per inch now. Second, Apple likely can use the improvement to simplify development for larger screen devices.

Yes because your subjective uniformed view beats out all the independent testing that shows otherwise. Further, Samsung devices cost more and are made of cheap material.

Yeah, tis isn't going to happen, there's literally no reason to do sucha thing, because you wouldn't be able to see a difference in the first place, not to mention it'd require more RAM, more disk space (to store the images) more CPU and GPU power, more electricity, the list doesn't end.

What Apple really SHOULD do, if they want to make the display better is use OLED, and a wider color gamut.

----------

So the CPU GPU and battery technology is not improving at the same pace?

Battery tech surely hasn't, we're still using years old Lithium-Ion battery tech, all that changes is the number of cells in the battery.

----------

Beyond Retina? This sounds useless, it's not like our eyes got better overnight, is this for Cyborgs :)?

Same for 4K or 8K resolution in small TV flatscreens at home (well, 4K would make some sense if 3D took off, but 3D is also a dud so far).

This is purely a "because we can" rumor in my view - with no advantage to the customer.

I would rather have Apple add a 4.2" or 4.5" screen size option instead of the current 4" inch, but I doubt they will change the iPhone screen size again as the article pointed out.

No, 4K will definitely be better, it'll actually be life-like, and 8k will be great for theater sized screens.

I agree with the iPhone thing though.

I just want something 4.5 or 5" screen size. Hearing this makes me want to wait until September or October, but I probably will be anyways since I'm trying to save up for the galaxy s4 w stock android

It doesn't make sense unless the screen is going to be larger or unless Apple just wants to beat the others on the spec sheet, which they don't seem to try to do normally.

No, I'm not buying any of your phones, comrade.

You can't tell the difference on that small of a screen, at least according to Apple in its definition for a retina display. I don't think I can perceive the pixels on the current screen unless I jam my face up to it.

Pixelphobe people are odd. They always come in with impassioned arguments about more pixels can't bee seen, the strain on the OS is too much, people watch from long distances..

And they are always wrong. 1080 is better to watch than 720, 24mp cameras are better than 6mp ones, retina iPad Minis will blow away the current one. Same with the phone. More is better.

Watch 1080p video on a 1" diagonal screen from 6 inches away, then watch 720p on the same screen. Which looks better? Which costs more and uses more battery power?

Hmmm really? Well if Apple play this game the it's a Tim Cook idea of playing the PPI game isn't it? Can't see the point myself, I would also believe the phone would need the new PowerVR Series 6 GPU to run it too?

Personally I'm more interested still in iOS7 and I also hope they give my iPhone 5 the new system where if I touch the top of the screen whilst typing, the screen doesn't jumo to the top of the page etc!!

If they increase the screen size, I honestly don't see it going back 4.3". Anything past that is to big. I think BB10 has it right with a 4.2" screen.
