just look at android screens, full hd DOES look better than HD, you cant say your eyes cant tell the dif. Come on guys be better than the fan boys

This is just wrong.
FullHD does NOT look better than HD in 4" screens, which is scientifically proved.
By the way even movie production does not use fullhd in every shot. Many FX shots are created in HD and are just blown up for the bigscreen.
And no one sees the difference

The Galaxy S4 has a PenTile screen with 312 Red and Blue Sub-Pixels Per Inch, how is this far higher than 326? Samsung certainly certainly knows how to market that 441 number, but in reality it only applies to Green Sub-Pixels.

How does that change the fact that it has a 1920x1080 resolution?

i would rather a larger screen (wont go back until its larger) but why not keep up with the competition? doesnt hurt now does it.

More ppi would be good, just stating that I'd rather have a larger screen than more ppi, but either way is better than nothing at all I suppose.

To the people asking "why"... The same question could be asked regarding why we needed a thinner desktop.

A thinner desktop is thinner. It requires less space in your bag. It makes an actual difference.

----------

actually there was no "for a phone" in steve jobs quote originally

You are kidding right? He was announcing iPhone 4 at that point. Obviously anything he said was about the phone and not his fridge at home.

A better alternative

This makes no sense.

Doubling the resolution on the other hand (not the pixel count) would make far more sense IMO which would also indicate a screen size increase.

1280 x 2272 (double resolution of iPhone 5) with a 5" screen = 521dpi

Not unreasonable with the latest display tech.

Then Apple simply adds 4x support in the same way they added 2x support. All current apps work with no alterations.

:apple:

Wouldn't doubling the resolution just chew through battery like crazy since it would require more gpu power to keep that screen going? I feel like Apple should focus more on the quality of their andonising or even increase battery life. That'll be a more worthwhile upgrade.

A thinner desktop is thinner. It requires less space in your bag. It makes an actual difference.

Doesn't everyone carry around their iMac everywhere? I'm not crazy.

Maybe someday this will happen but not yet. I don't think battery technology is nearly good enough for this big a jump without killing what is already barely good enough battery life for some iPhone users.

i feel like a broken record or parrot for saying this :

apple needs a 4.5 inch 1080p iphone, that would set for 2 years at least

how can you all say it doesn't make sense? all the competition has far higher dpi in there screens than the iPhone. Does apple really want to be left behind???

The real question of making sense is if the price of HD displays has lowered enough. Industry standard for HD is 1920x1080. Pne everybody hits that, the race stops for a while. With all the manufactures gearing them up at 5" phones it makes no sense for Apple to pay to make the older "Retina" screens for more money.

Nonsense. The pixel count has become a constrain for Apple. It is time for Apple to innovate IOS GUI development so that apps automatically adjust to different screen size without sacrificing readability.

Thats never going to happen when you have different DPI's.

Everything in an app with the exception of non image text and webview CSS content is just images. If you make an image and you scale it, it looks crappy no matter what you do unless its a vector which doesn't work in every case.

Apple's way of @2x is the easiest way to do it. And they can always add in @3x or @4x depending on what they decide a devices resolution is.

Since with iOS7 the original 320x480 resolution will no longer be supported Apple can make the base resolution anything they want.

Why? Exactly, why? I want apple to do something but not this.

It's just a rumour, one which is most likely false. This goes against the entire philosophy of Apple. They never get into the spec race with competitors just for the sake of being the best on paper.

No!? If anything they will wait until the iPhone 6/2014 to increase screen size & move to 1080p or something similar.

Then they will have two primary phones, iPhone 4" and iPhone 4.7" or similar.

Sqrt(2)

To double the pixel count, you don't multiply each dimension by 1.5, but by SQRT(2) or 1.4142...

You will get a very odd resolution. This makes no sense.

never get those devs complaining if thats how they make their living. its their freakin job ...

i dont complain when my boss gives me a crappy task either. ill just do it

Am I the only one that doesn't want a bigger display on the iPhone? I think the display on the iPhone 5 is plenty big and all of these people walking around with tablet sized phones just look silly.

You are not alone. 4S user who is reluctant to upgrade here. I like the pocketability of my phone.

My only question is - why?

Are people really going to see that kind of difference? On a 4" phone?

My thoughts exactly... It truly is a total waste... like what is the point right?

Instead of improving on speed, we should hear about screen improvements? Maybe it's just me, but my eyes wouldn't see the difference anyway and I honestly wouldn't care it's a phone for the love of all that's good and decent online.

Personally what I want in an iPhone 5(S) or 6 would be:

• NO HOME BUTTON ANYMORE! Some sensor thing, I'm sick and tired of stuck buttons and the cost to have them fixed. It's my third iPhone that is this risk factor. Lost two due to this issue, had to have them fixed and it wasn't cheap.

• Faster is always welcome, though I'm happy with the speed of my iPhone 5.

• Better camera though honestly the one in the iPhone 5 is simply amazing.

•*BIGGER storage same price, focus on 32GB, 64GB and 128GB (For those who use it for video etc), same goes for iPads.

• Wireless Charging, please! It's 2013, my tooth brush, phone and camera charges wirelessly! Come on Apple YEW KEN DEW IT! I BERIEVE IN YEWWW!!! (Voiced as Buk Lau)

• BETTER GLASS, Scratch Free etc...

•*Even Lighter

• Thumb print

• Built in Tricorder

• Infra Red, Night vision, laser vision and quantum time fracture vision... oh and see through clothes vision

• Nuclear powered batteries... should be real good next to the "jewels". ;p

• Option to transform into the Monolith from 2001 and start a new civilisation on a random planet of YOUR choice!

• 5G with the option of 6G WiFi extreme ultra fire power!

• Ability to call people from different time periods..

• Deanna Troi's phone number

Ok, I really just want a few... but hey you can dream!

But yeah you're right...;)

Um, no.

Although Apple did pull a pointless move like this before when they pulled the disc drive from the imac. So i guess you never know. But still - no.

Pulling the drives wasn't pointless. It was a concerted effort to get folks to stop using them. And for most that wasn't really an issue since they weren't anyway.

For this to make sense it needs another reason other than 'to best HTC etc in soecs' like outdoor use, the companies making in cell don't make less, etc

i could see perhaps, assuming they have dealt with any battery drain issues, them making a screen for some new higher quality video, maybe even 3d with maybe even a mode to scale down for games that are old school retina. It would be nice for the developers not to have to support higher if its not really needed.

I agree, this is a race to nowhere... More Pixels More Pixels More Pixels ???

Grabbing at straws, eager to differentiate, yet going about it as though they're lost.

Sad Apple

You sound like this isn't just a rumor

Sad.
