iPhone 5s Home button light not working

I just unpacked my new iPhone 5s and have been using it for a day but the ring light in the home screen button hasn't lit up yet. Is there a particular setting to make this happen?

As much of a joke as this is, I was actually disappointed that Apple didn't incorporate a light into the TouchID. One of the features I like about Android devices is the LED notification light. I rather have my iPhone keep the screen off, buzz, and use a small ring of light, than turn on the screen for a couple seconds each time something comes in.

I feel the home button / TouchID would have been a great place to add that.
