Can't complain about my experience. I set the alarm for just before sale time and used the Apple Store app on my iPad. I was looking at the purchase confirmation within 5 minutes. Back to sleep I went.
While later driving into work, I noticed the AT&T store only had 3 people in line. I couldn't help myself - I stopped and asked what they had left in stock. Apparently the store only received the space grey, which was what I wanted. They said they were running low on 16's, but had decent numbers of 32's and 64's. About 20 minutes later I was back on the road to work, with a 64GB space grey model in hand.
Only complaint was that the AT&T dude turned the phone on and go through the initial prompts. I restored it back to factory because I didn't know any other way to find the restore option. No big deal, it was just a few minutes.
Restore is all done and I'm happy with the phone. I love TouchID. It's very quick and is a great way to skip the passcode. It will be nice while driving.
I look forward to trying out out the new camera, burst mode, etc.
In the end, I am glad that I stopped. I cancelled the order from earlier and saved the expedited shipping cost. More importantly, I won't have to stay home for delivery day.
