If you paid any attention to the numerous threads on numerous forums posted by others, Apple has often rejected repair for devices if there was even so much as a dent on the device. It is not uncommon, regardless of leaked damage assessment documents, for Apple to say no and users to believe there is no way Apple would cover the repair/replacement.

Well, to be fair, some of these Apple stories involve non-U.S. based Apple stores that may not be following the guideline we have here (and they sound pretty shady like willing to replace it only if they purchase Applecare) or we weren't getting the whole story from the OPs. We've run into too many armchair critics who think they know better like people shouldn't be able to return a dropped or scratched up iPhone within the 14 day return period.

These phones most definitely can split or crack on their own. My galaxy s3 did it, and my co workers iphone 5 did it as well. There does need to be external factors that play into this, but gravity and a small manufacturing defect can be more than enough to cause it to happen. I'm not saying whether or not this is what happened here, I'm just pointing out that it DOES indeed happen.

iphones dont just crack on their own.

I disagree. I had a replacement screen crack within 30 mins of installing it with the phone simply lying on a table. I couldn't decide if I should blame myself for overtightening one of the screws of the screen itself for being sub-par quality (I'm sure it wasn't an Apple OEM screen - it was too cheap lol). This was in a 4. Funny part was that the crack it developed was nearly identical to what the OP sees; started at the earpiece speaker and ran to the edge, though mine did run through the top left corner of the actual LCD screen.

So yeah, sometimes they do seem to crack on their own... at least in my (albeit limited) experience. :D

But it is arguable that by cracking in that manner (hairline) and in that position, the glass was not living up to its expected performance envelope, which is why Apple appears willing to replace such fractures.

There was a story posted by someone here a while ago with a single hairline crack, they've placed their iPhone in the accessory holder under the car deck and it got hot, cracked the screen like the OP. The genius and Appl Store MGMT figured it out and still replaced his IP5 with a warning.

Back in the days, the Treos from Palm would crack like this during lift off on commercial flight planes due to the air pressure.

The warning was unnecessary. According to the internal document in post #22, a single hairline crack is covered under warranty whether or not accidental damage is present. I suppose their rationale is it may not have otherwise cracked from said accidental damage if it wasn't for a possible manufacturing defect.

lets re-read that part right there. the screen didn't crack itself.

But is it even POSSIBLE to overtighten one of those screws on the side of the screen frame with a tiny tiny screwdriver that would cause it to crack on its own? I doubt it... I blame it more on my generic/aftermarket screen replacement than anything else.

And thanks for choosing the select part of my quote to make it say something else... the rest of my quote said "I couldn't decide if..." Kind alters the meaning a bit, don't ya think? :D

you also didn't mention that you tightened a screw in the original post. kind of alters the meaning a bit, don't ya think? :D

That is unless they have been changed since being made public. And you don't know that.

I can always confirm with my sister who's an Apple store manager. In fact, one of my kids' iPads will need to be swapped out because there's a hairline crack at a corner so we at least know that single hairline crack is still eligible for warranty services.

Keep us posted as to changes in policy. My thought is though a single hairline crack that can be shown to be caused be accidental or intentional damage should not be covered. I am not apple though and I would think they would want to provide legitimate coverage while desling appropriately with scammers.

This is g.t.n. info though.

That was my initial thought as well and I tried to argue that with my sister (to no avail of course). However, after thinking about it I now believe their rationale for having such a policy is it may not have produced just a single hairline crack from a drop if it wasn't for a possible manufacturing defect in the screen (given that many people drop their iPhones without cracking) or it's too problematic to screen legitimate causes hence the blanket policy.

I would not worry about scammers when it comes to single hairline cracks. You'd have to be quite lucky to cause a single hairline crack intentionally. Most drops/impacts cause multiple curved or spiderweb cracks.

Exactly. Gorilla glass doesn't normally fail with a single hairline fracture. The assumption by apple is that if it does, something was wrong with it.

So i took my phone to an apple service centre and they agree to send the phone tonsingapore (where there is an apple syore) to have it checked. If this were manufacture defect, they will replace it for me. Now i am still waiting for reply, will update you guys how this turn out.

Ps. the guy in apple reseller told me phone cracked with single hairline could be caused by swollen battery when running at high temperature. So yeah, phone does crack on it own LOL

Hey guys, thanks for all the reply. Tonight i just got my replacement phone back. Although it took like 2 weeks (well, shipping to singapore and a chinese new year holiday add some extra days), i am still grateful that apple willing to replace for free. Wonder any other phone company does that..?
