Hence the fingerprint scanner.

If you don't swipe your finger, you can't unlock the phone, so you can't pay or access confidential information.

If even Samsung's Wallet doesn't use NFC, why would Apple want NFC?

Fingerprints have been such a raging success on computers. Who wants them on phones?

I sure hope Apple goes 6 monthly updates - I won't be able to stand this quality of rumour until October. Bring on the April iPhone 5S. If Apple doesn't ship a 5" iPhone later this year, more than just beloved pundits will be going for a more usefully sized phone, from some other company.

It was also hilarious to hear world mac Mobile World Congress attendees claiming iPhone hurt their eyes after looking at the new high res phones at MWC. Any wonder Apple doesn't attend…

Apple got a pass on iPhone 5, last year. They really improved the insides. But they'd better fix up the outside this year. We'll know soon enough - if the new iPhones won't live up to expectations, the new double-down on security Apple will begin leaking like a sieve, just like last year & we'll know everything about the phone, except its bra size, long before it arrives.

Never thought I'd be begging for a 6 monthly iPhone update…

How is a phone with a 4" display not "useful"? I prefer not to walk around with a tablet in my front pocket every day thank you. And I would put the resolution and quality of display of my iPhone 5 up against any other mobile device on the market. If Apple releases the next phone with a screen size any larger than around 4.5" I would refuse to buy it. I want something sleek, sexy, and different from every other device out there. If size is your only concern, go buy an android. But for all around performance, quality, design.security you won't beat an iPhone.

Depending on Apple's implementation of NFC, this may very well be my reason for upgrading from the iP5. Actually, I had already planned on upgrading anyway! ;)

Cool. Steal my phone and get my car as a bonus. Then be directed to my house so you can steal my other stuff.

But if they stole your keys then they could, by your logic, rob your house too. I don;t think that your objection makes a lot of sense. Especially given that they wouldn't know which car is yours in most cases.

----------

If your car supports keyless access, it is linked by the car's security system to a key that can only be programmed by the dealer.(That is a good thing) The new Acura RLX has the tech you are talking about and it is linked to an App on the iPhone that can open the door transfer data back an forth to the navi etc...
It communicates via wifi and bluetooth.

That sounds very cool.

----------

The Good - no password, just give your iPhone the finger to log on ;)
The Bad - probably won't work 100% out of the gate so I hope log in via finger is not the only option
The Ugly - criminals cutting off your finger when they steal your phone

Nicely written.

Every day while commuting I use a NFC card, six times. I just "beep" me through the gates, together with millions others on the way to office or home. That's the only way you can handle these bunch of people efficiently.
For the entertainment on those pleasant rides I use iPhone or iPod. Having those devices NFC enabled will surely makes my life a bit easier. One object less to handle while hopping from one train to another bus.

As talking with CNN's word: go beyond borders.
It's maybe not used where you stay around ; it's surely used in my areas ...

Couldn't agree with you more. Just because the USA,Australia and UK etc...
are not big adopters doesn't mean the rest of world isn't!
5 years living in different parts of Asia sealed that deal for me.

The mix of fingerprint tech and NFC will strike up a reasonable balance of convenience and security for apple to finally move forward on this front.
Me personally, i would rather they revamp iOS.

If they introduce NFC it's really only to play catch-up. I'm fine with Apple playing catch-up as long as they

1. Implement it in an innovative way that nobody has done yet.

2. Has a good purpose and not just there.

Not many places use NFC anyway. Fingerprint sensor is cool but not needed. I don't really care for a larger screen/phone, so I'm not sure what I really want or think would be the next BIG innovation.

NFC is futureland for me.

Give me the fingerprint unlock, so I don't have to type my passcode at 3am.

For people who have to use/model good security 1) no PIN, 2) PIN = 1111 or 3) PIN = 4 digits doesn't cut it. Simple passcode off, password & wipe after 10 bads are mandatory in my standards. Let me convert that 3am squinting and typing to a finger swipe and I'm VERY happy.

Just don't muff the implementation so that the scan isn't secure!

You just know the religious fundamentalists will be all over it with the 666 mark of the beast thing with the NFC as part of a phone. Think about it.

The mark goes on the hand or if that's missing, the forehead. Nothing about phones. If other fundys try to give you NFC phone twaddle, tell them I said to read the book.

Hell, I can get you a finger by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with nail polish.

As usual, covered in a 1960s scifi book. :) Still, you could just put my finger in a vise and I'd tell you my passcode.

No need to cut it off. I don't have that level of secrecy and anyone who does needs security beyond the OS level access controls. And a cyanide capsule.

Once again, "I don't want it so nobody else should want it". Need to think beyond your needs and borders.

So right! All these "nope" comments are just spam. At least give a reason beyond "I don't need it". "Nopers" it's not a poll. We might care about your logical argument, but we don't care about your vote.

huh? Apple introduce 2 new hardware features, aside the obvious camera boost, processor boost, IOS7.......2 new hardware features:rolleyes: Thats FAR too much for Apple to give away, thats the kind of stuff Samsung do. I am a complete Apple advocate, but they just don't throw many cards in one hand at all. Lets REALLY hope this changes with JI and their POSSIBLE realisation they are now in a VERY competitive market, not like they use to be 3 years ago.

Still, I say bring it on, bring that sh.t on.

Cool. Steal my phone and get my car as a bonus. Then be directed to my house so you can steal my other stuff

The only way this is different from stealing your keys is that most people's car keys have a remote on them so a thief can walk around nearby car parks pressing the button until your car announces itself to them. Unless, of course, you don't have sat nav in your car or you remove it every time you get out (as you should). In terms of sat nav security, you should program your "Home" address as something near enough that it works for you but not your actual house (or even street) so that it's no use to a thief. - No issue here.

That's great, until the battery in your wallet dies and you need to buy something important... :(

That's an interesting point. Presumably the actual chip would still respond (there's no power in an NFC enabled card) but you wouldn't get a receipt on your phone. Maybe you could pick it up later, next time you swipe? Maybe wireless charging could provide enough power for a receipt to be generated? - Can't see this being an insurmountable problem.

Meaning if you lose or break your phone, you lose your phone *and* your wallet *and* your drivers license *and* your tickets.

Oh and if you don't have the internet. Your wallet is in the cloud. Wow!

You must be enjoying that :)

I think that in order to stop NFC working, you'd have to pretty much grind the phone to dust so I wouldn't be worried about breaking it. Lost / stolen is a different story... Losing my phone would already be seriously problematic to me. Losing my wallet and keys as well would undoubtably be worse! Of course, with everything stored in the cloud, you could presumably call in anywhere that sells iPhones, buy a new one (yes, I know that's expensive but you're gonna have to do it at this point anyway) and put everything back on it. Perhaps the purchase could be enabled by using your Apple ID and your fingerprint (once the new device is restored to your backup). - A problem, no doubt but I don't think it's much worse than currently. Besides, not using something in case you lose it is not a great way to live IMHO.

That's a great BONUS for muggers,

As oppossed to stealing your phone and wallet currently. Except of course that a bank card can be used online with no form of ID and cash is completely untraceable. I suppose they could force you to swipe your finger to transfer your money but that's traceable and no easier than forcing you to enter your PIN at an ATM. - If anything, this would be more secure, not less.

I definitely want fingerprint tech. As NFC takes off, I'll start wanting that too :D

Easier to restore a new phone with all your stuff on it that "restore" your wallet. I think it's the way of the future.

If a mugger stole your phone and wallet right now, they'd have the same thing wouldn't they? No difference.

I'd be surprised to see Apple put a Finger Print reader & NFC in and call it the 5S. That's a big hardware jump worthy of a number increment. Honestly I'm not even sure iOS7 will get a big refresh :(, probably will be getting faster processor, camera upgrade and some new app or an expansion of an app

I think the iPhone 6 if they continue to use the number format will be the one with the all new iOS overhaul along with NFC, finger printer reader and larger screen somewhere between 4.3-4.8", wireless charging.

I don't see why people fussing about not wanting NFC. It's simple. Don't use it if you don't want it. NFC and a finger print reader working in conjunction could be handy. Also with wireless charging the pad could have a NFC tag to activate certain modes when you lay your phone on the pad for the night.

I guess we'll see in a few months.

is there anything apple could think of rather than NFC and fingerprint?

They should add NFC but there's not a whole lot more at the moment you can do hardware wise other than spec jumps.

They need to overhaul iOS with features that may seem simple but helpful. I know Samsung get's flack here but things like simply putting your phone face down can mute it. Not sure about the new eye scroll feature. If it works it'll be pretty neat.

That's where Apple needs to go. Making the user experience better and adding features to make task simpler

iPhone 5S could be delayed to September

Jefferies Slashes Apple (AAPL) Price Target to $420; Sees Later iPhone Launches

The analyst cut calendar Q1 iPhone estimate from 37.5M to 35M due to builds being only ~25M. He cut revenues to $41 billion (guidance $41-$43 billion; consensus $43 billion) but see a 25% probability of missed guidance due to sales slowing even further in H2:Mar after Samsung's Galaxy S4 launch event this Thursday.
The firm's checks indicate Apple's suppliers are having problems with the new casing colors leading to a push out from Jun to Jul-Sep after Apple hoped to pull forward the update. Checks also indicate pricing of the low-cost iPhone will be $350-$450 as some of the specs are higher-end than we expected
The iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 may not be enough, according to the analyst. "The phones could have fingerprint technology and we believe Apple is trying to move the iPhone 6 launch to CQ1 to stop the hemorrhaging to phablets, but historically when handset makers fall out of favor (e.g., the RAZR, BBRY, HTC) they fall faster/further than expected.

Those actions can/could also be triggered by geofences or a preprogrammed schedule for Do-Not-Disturb, no need for NFC.
Using geofences would actually be much easier, because that wouldn't require user-interaction every day again and again, but only once, while setting it up.

Preprogrammed schedule does not work for me as I have a irregular work schedule. As for geofencing, like I mentioned previously, it is not precise enough for different rooms in a house. User intereaction? A single tap on the tag with a touch on the screen isn't much of an interaction.

Are you telling me you aren't smacking a galaxy s3 all the time to share media?
/s

No... No... I'm not.

Fingerprint sensor removes security risk, and Apple's involvement increases "real adoption". Seriously that's like saying, "Teleporters have no real adoption so companies are wasting time trying to research and implement them."
Who says that?

You're comparing Teleporters to NFC?

What are you looking forward to doing with NFC now that you can't do already with WiFi, Cellular or Bluetooth?

For the sake of moving technology forward I hope apple finally implements NFC. That way I can use google wallet more.

Never quite understood the purpose of NFC. Pulling my wallet out of my pocket and taking a card out isn't an arduous task I'm longing to rid myself of.

The fingerprint sensor's a nice idea (if it can replace typing in lock screen passwords it'd be fantastic) but Apple's never done this before, not even in their laptops.

When will people understand that mobile payment is just a small part of NFC?

I am not sure about anyone else, but I have multiple RFID cards for either work or transit. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to use your phone to access all of those places at once?

How about NFC to help out to change phone setting for when you get home or leave, etc instead of having to fiddle with it everyday for when you are in school, work, home, whatever.

Yes, samsung pushes the whole tap photosharing thing and I am not sold on that. However, where I live, I have noticed a lot of advertisements in public places to have a sensor embedded into their physical ad (for example in a subway station) in addition to QR code for users to get valued info by just placing your device on the display.

Payment is only a small slice of it.

Another thing about NFC and payments. Didn't Visa and Samsung team up so that Samsung can use Visa PayWave system.

Downer is here in the states those on AT&T probably won't have that function.

If Apple got into the game NFC would open up more and more

Tried to use it in my grocery store cuz they had the nfc wireless sign on their CC reader. Phone scanned, got a beep, and the cashier goes "Oh we never hooked that thing up, so you can't use it." Fuuuuuuu......

yeah... we need iphone to go mute if it is faced down. ios is getting old...reinventing time.
